Energy storage

• Energy storage will soon become an essential element

of the smart grid

• Especially as more power generation from inherently

intermittent sources such as solar and wind come online.

• In some markets, there may also be value for companies

to buy and store power when it is least expensive, and

use the stored power during peak demand when prices

are highest (arbitrage).

• Electric energy storage systems are crucial for the

further development the sectors, including:

o Renewable energy,

o Automotive,

o Grid stabilization,

o Smart grid,

o Back-up power.

• The two main applications of energy storage

technologies are:

o Power-driven by the needs for power quality

o Bridging power-and for energy management.

• The most important drivers for developing electric energy

storage systems are grid stability and reliability

inseparable part of smart grids and distributed energy

generating systems in the future.”

• Reliable and durable electric energy storage technologies

will enhance the usage and commercial attractiveness of

energy sources, such as wind and solar power.

• This is because of their flexibility in use, in grid balancing

and connecting intermittent renewable energy

generators to the main electric grid.

• Frost & Sullivan research reveals that lithium-ion

batteries will play the most important role in the future of

electric energy storage systems.

• Fuel cells, could also be used for energy storage.

• Before electric energy storage technology can be

adopted on a mass scale, certain technical problems

need to be resolved.

• For instance: o Focused on developing new chemistry that will optimize battery

durability and energy density.

o Reduce the time needed for battery recharging

• find solution is likely to encourage widespread adoption

of battery technology by the automotive and electric grid

industries.

Solar is not available when you want it, but it's

available when you need it.

• The need for energy storage will also be driven by

nature of many renewable energy sources, such as solar

power and wind.

• Solar is generating in a very high correlation when the

grid is needing power.

• Reality is when the demand is the highest.

• A typical application is load leveling, which involves

charging storage when energy cost is low and using

the stored energy as needed..
