Mexican axolotl (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl) salamanders are amphibians that

spend their whole lives underwater

HabitatThe axolotl only exists in the wild in one place. The lake

complex of Xochimilco

Physical DescriptionThe axolotl’s weight is only 2-4 ounces and it’s length is up

to twelve inches. Its body is covered in slimy skin. Unlike most salamanders, the axolotl never loses its gills.

DietThe axolotl is a carnivore. This means it’s a meat eater.

Common foods are insects, fish, and molluscs.

Behavioral CharacteristicsMost salamanders leave the water when they become

adults. But not the axolotl. The axolotl spends its entire life underwater.

Interesting FactsHere is a fun fact about axolotls. Unlike most salamanders
