On his recent visit to India Mr. Obama addressed a selective audience at the Siri Fort Auditorium on 27th January, 2015 in Delhi. One of the topics discussed was Human trafficking. He stated, “Together, we can stand up against human

trafficking and work to end the scourge of

modern day slavery.”

Human trafficking is the trade in humans, commonly for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or othersIt is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights

Women are trafficked to various destinations and forced to live as sex workers, salves or are forced into marriageChildren are trafficked within the country and trans-nationally Girls are forced to work as labourers, sex workers or are forced to

work as servants where they are abused, beaten and raped Boys are sold as labourers and forced to work in industries like

coal, handloom, fireworks, infrastructures, etc

Poverty Inadequate education facilities Shortage of employment Lack of family support

Lack of self esteem, emotional disturbance, disorientation High risk of transmitting sexual diseases like HIV AIDS Malnutrition due to improper supply of meals Poor health due to inadequate medical facilities Non acceptance in society

Relevant policies should be developed Immigration at borders need to be sensitized Help lines and help booths should be available in times of

distress Better education facilities should be provided

India and America are working together to curb human trafficking and have joined hands through partnership with Government of India, Central and State Government, etcSome of the NGO’s are given below: Anti – Human Trafficking Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Anti – Slavery International, etc.

Human Trafficking though a cruel gruesome crime is still prevalent and on the rise in countries across the world.

We can enforce policies, prosecute the offenders under various applicable laws to combat Human Trafficking.

However it is of utmost importance that we educate every individual and change their attitudes, making this world a better place for future generations.
