MEDIATION

What is mediation?

Mediation is a process for handling conflict in which two or more parties involved in a dispute

meet with a neutral, third party mediator to discuss the issues and attempt to reach

a voluntary agreement.

What is the role of the mediator?

The mediator facilitates dialogue between the parties to help them develop their own resolution to their issues and concerns. Agreements reached

are by mutual consent of all parties.Mediators do not take sides, impose decisions,

or give advice.

The mediation skills in the European Union

• Economic factors

• Social factors

• Cultural factors

Common European Framework of References for languages

The CEF is not a directive. It aims to encourage those involved in language teaching to reflect on and, where appropriate, question their current aims and methods.

Mediation as a language skill helps learners develop► social skills

► collaborative skills ► cultural awareness

In both the receptive and productive modes, the written and/or oral activities of mediation make communication possible between persons who are unable, for whatever reason, to communicate with each other directly. Translation or interpretation, a paraphrase, summary or record, provides for a third party a (re)formulation of a source text to which this third party does not have direct access. Mediating language activities – (re)processing an existing text – occupy an important place in the normal linguistic functioning of our societies.

Helen Keller, who overcame blindness and deafness to become a leading social activist in the early 20th century, wrote:

I am only one, but still I am one.

I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.

And, because I cannot do every-thing,

I will not refuse to do the something I can do.
