The new Chapter since SoER No. 9Tourism; but why?
Tourism is a very important economic sector in Austria(18.000 Mio. EUR; 7,5% of the GDP; 130 Mio. overnight-stay)
Tourism in Austria is directly connected to the environment(skiing, hiking, mountain-biking, lake-side tourism, etc.)
Sensitive Areas are effected(high alpine areas, complex eco-systems of alpine lakes, etc.)
Direct environmental effects(traffic, energy consumption, waste, artificial snow, etc.)
in-direct environmental effects(touristic infrastructure, like cable cars, Skiing slopes, etc.)
6
Data collection Compilation of existing data
(energy, traffic, noise, waste, etc.)
Strategies how to allocate effects from tourism(statistical methods, calculations, surveys, etc.)
Results: - Impact of tourism is visible- ‘Need for action’ is obvious
- Strategies can be developed- Impact of adaptations can be calculated
7
Benefits New concepts
(e.g. car-free villages)
New ideas(environmentally-sensitive tourism, revival of unique local cuisine, etc.)
New communications messages(tourists prefer a clean and healthy environment, better image, etc.)
Last but not least: Higher turnover per tourist
