HOUSING DECISIONS pages 391-396How are these mounted?

Which way do they direct light?• Valance lighting• Bracket lighting• Cornice lighting• Cove lighting• Recessed down lights• Surface mounted down lights• Wall washers• Soffit lighting• Luminous ceilings• Strip lighting (not in book)• Track lighting

Define each of these types of lighting.

• General lighting– Direct– Indirect

• Local (Task) lighting• Accent lighting• Structural lighting• Nonstructural lighting

OBJECTIVE 4.05:COMPARE various forms of

lighting.

Lighting has various functions. Lighting can:

1. Make a task easier to complete

2. Contribute to safety

3. Add beauty and set a mood

LIGHTING SOURCES

Natural light comes from natural sources, such as the sun or a flame.

Colors are more true in natural lighting.

ARTIFICIAL LIGHT includes:

Artificial light comes in colors from

warm-white to cool-white to daylight.

INCANDESCENT LIGHTING is produced by electricity passing through a filament in a glass bulb.

This light tends to be warm & flattering.

FLUORESCENT LIGHT is produced when chemicals inside a glass tube transform ultraviolet rays.

Costs more than incandescent, but lasts a long time.

COMPACT FLUORESCENT BULBS (CFLs) are fluorescent lights that screw into regular incandescent light

sockets.

CFLs save energy and last for about 9000 hours.

FIBER OPTIC light flows through hair-like strands of glass. Does not give off any heat.

LIGHT EMITING DIODES (LEDs) are made of crystals on silicon chips about the size of a grain of salt.

CATEGORIES OF LIGHTING

1. General lighting provides a uniform level of lighting throughout the room.

• DIRECT LIGHTING is a type of general lighting. • Direct lighting shines directly toward an object.

• INDIRECT LIGHTING is also a type of general lighting.• Indirect lighting shines up and reflects off of ceilings and

walls.

2. LOCAL or TASK LIGHTING focuses light on an area where it is most needed.

Provides extra light for reading, cooking, sewing, etc.

3. ACCENT LIGHTING is very bright and is aimed directly on a specific object to create a dramatic effect.

WAYS TO DELIVER LIGHT

NONSTURCTURAL LIGHTING is not built in and can be easily moved and changed.

STRUCTURAL LIGHTING is built-in and wiring is usually hidden.

COVE LIGHTING•mounted near the ceiling•directs light upward.

RECESSED DOWNLIGHTS (can lights) direct a beam of light from the ceiling downward.

SURFACE MOUNTED DOWNLIGHTS are similar to recessed lights, except the “can” is visible.

WALL WASHERS spread light over a wall from ceiling to floor.

SOFFITT LIGHTING is an enclosed box-like structure with a diffuser at the bottom.

LUMINOUS CEILING PANELS are fluorescent

tubes placed under plastic panels.
