What is an Alternative Break?

“An alternative break is a trip where a group of college students engage in volunteer service, typically for a week. …Each trip has a focus on a particular social issue, such

as poverty, education reform, refugee resettlement, and the environment. Students learn about the social issues and

then perform week-long projects with local non-profit organizations.” (BreakAway)

What makes HASB and Alt Breaks Unique?

• HASB is student led and developed• Drug and alcohol-free experiences• Heavy emphasis on group and individual reflection • Working with a diverse group of people from UConn• Strive for social change

Past HASB• OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS!!• Affiliated with Honors Council and the Honors Program• Our past trips include:

• Pearlington, MS – 2008• New Orleans, LA – 2009• Immokalee, FL – 2010• New Orleans, LA – 2011• Dungannon, VA – 2012• Mobile, AL – 2013

HASB 2014• Where: Beards Fork, WV (Southern Appalchia)

• When: Spring Break• Friday evening: March 15, 2014• Saturday evening: March 22, 2014

• Social Focus: • Extreme rural poverty and education• Low-income housing• Working with disadvantaged peoples• Isolationism

Why Appalachia?

• Very isolated and neglected part of the United States

• Very little media coverage• According to the 2010

Census,• Beards Fork’s

population – 199 people• 74 households• Coal town

Southern Appalachia Labor SchoolThe mission of the Southern Appalachian Labor School

(SALS) is to provide education, research, and linkages for working class and disenfranchised peoples in order to

promote understanding, empowerment, and change. The Southern Appalachian Labor School is committed to

developing a real comprehension of the social, economic, and legal structures which affect the lives of the

Appalachian People.

What will we do?• YouthBuild

• provides education, counseling and job skills to unemployed young American adults (between ages 16 and 24), generally high school dropouts.

• Gaining job experience learning construction skills• Working towards through GED/high school diploma

• Construction Work• Total Rehabilitation of Coal Homes • New Home Construction• Minor Rehabilitation

Logistics - Travel• Travelling by luxury coach bus – 10 hours and 45

minutes!

Logistics - Living

• Staying in SALS Community Center• Former elementary

school/church• Has kitchen, WiFi, hot

showers, bunk-beds,

• We will be cooking our own meals!

Tentative Itinerary • Friday Night –Saturday Morning: Travel (11 Hrs.)

• Saturday/Sunday: Fun activities, Group Bonding, SALS Orientation

• Mon-Thurs: Site-Work

• Friday: Site-Work, Evening Fun Activity, leave for UConn

• Saturday: Return to UConn

Cost• Includes food during the week, transportation, living

accommodations, group bonding supplies, etc.• Comes to ~$450-$475 (TENTATIVELY)

• USG Funding• Donation Days – (Insomnia, Mooyah’s, Froyo)• Donations from friends & family• Other fundraisers!

• Submit $100 Non-Refundable Deposit

• Application and Deposit must be submitted before your name is on the HASB 2014 Participant List

• First-Come, First-Serve: 43 available spots
