tips on caring for the lawnAT THIS time of year, thelawn is actively growing andrequires feeding, moss kill-ing, weeding and regularmowing.

All lawns need feeding in or-der to maintain vigour. Whenfeeding, look out for signsof pest or disease and applymoss killer if required. Regu-lar maintenance is the bestway to approach a lawn, andmay avoid the need for reno-vation later on.

Over winter, the lawn doesnot grow much, but once theweather warms up in earlyspring, you can start mowing, and this is also a good time toover-seed any areas damagedover winter.

Lawn care treatments

a green sward, water whenthe soil becomes dry, but be-fore the grass turns yellowor brown. If the ground isvery hard, aerate it by spik-ing with a garden fork beforewatering, to aid water pen-etration.

Watering once a week toevery 10 days is normally suf-ficient. Ensure that the waterreaches a depth of 10cm (4in)after each watering. In themiddle of summer 1 sq m (1sq yd) needs about 20-litres (5

Below are some of the tasksto undertake over spring andsummer:

MowingThis is the most obvious,

and one of the most impor-tant, maintenance task overspring and summer. Mowingregularly keeps the lawn ingood health.

Killing mossMoss is a problem in damp,

poorly drained lawns. Springis a good time to remedy mossproblems. There are severaloptions for dealing with mossin lawns,

FeedingIn mid-spring, often late

March to April, use a pro-prietary spring or summerlawn fertiliser at the manu-facturer’s recommendedrates. Feeding the lawn willincrease vigour and help pre-vent weeds and moss fromestablishing. Apply fertilis-

summer, often May to Au-gust, repeat the applicationof spring or summer lawnfertiliser or apply 15g per sqm (½oz per sq yd) sulphateof ammonia mixed with fourtimes its weight dry soil.Mixing with soil ensureseven distribution and avoidsscorching the grass. Applythis mixture in cool, moistconditions and lightly waterit in. As an organic alterna-tive, use chicken manure pel-lets. Repeat fertiliser applica-tion a third time if needed sixto eight weeks later.

Do not apply spring or sum-mer lawn fertilisers, chickenmanure pellets or sulphate ofammonia after August. Theycontain too much nitrogenfor autumn use, encourag-ing green leafy growth at thewrong time of year, when itcould be damaged by wintercold or pests and disease.

Over-seedingAfter moss or weeds have

been removed, or where grassis growing sparsely, over-seeding may be necessary.Early autumn is the best timefor this job, but mid-spring isalso suitable.

• Break up the sur-face with a fork and rake it tomake a reasonably fine sur-face.

• Sow grass seed athalf the recommended rateor, where there are no recom-mendations, at 10-15g per sqm (½oz per sq yd).

• Lightly rake to in-corporate the seed into thesurface.

• Where birds are aproblem, net the area.

• If the weather re-mains dry for two or threedays water gently with asprinkler.

• Grass should sproutseven to 10 days after sowing.

In heavily used areas, choose a hardwearing util-ity mix containing ryegrass. Most lawn grasses do notthrive in shade, so for theseareas choose a shade-tolerantmix.

WateringEven if lawns turn brown

and dry over summer, theyusually recover well whenrains return. Watering isusually not necessary oversummer If you do have towater the lawn and maintain

gallons) every seven days.Looking after new lawnsLawns from turf should be

left completely unused fortheir first week. Lawns fromseed should be left unused un-til their first mowing. Avoidusing new lawns heavily intheir first season.

Newly laid lawns can be fedlike established lawns. Theyneed watering, but should notbe over-watered, as this mayresult in shallow rooting andpoor establishment.
