Now that the deck is lookingfabulous after its clean and stain(Your Weekend, September 28),

it’s time to give some love to youroutdoor furniture. Tables, chairs andbenches can be marked by moss, mildew and lichen and look just plaintired after a season or more out in theweather.

Resene has a wonderful productcalled Timber & Furniture Gel; awater-based gel stain that comes in

four colours – jarrah tree, kwila, sheer black andsilvered grey – and willeasily restore yourfurniture back to itsformer glory.

I chose the kwila colour for an old kwilatable and chairs. The first job was toremove the seat and back covers fromthe chairs and move the table onto anarea of gravel where I could work on itwithout worrying about the run-off ofthe moss and mould killer and timberand deck wash on the surroundinggarden.

The table top and chairs had obvioussigns of lichen and mildew so, wearingprotective gear, I applied moss andmould killer. Follow the instructions onthe bottle for correct dilution. The Reseneproduct needs to stay on the wood for 48hours so it can kill the spores of moss andmould and delay their regrowth. (Seebox for safety notes.)

Now for the fun part. Wearing gloves, apply the stain or gel with a soft,lint-free cloth, brush, or speed brush.Best results are obtained by rubbing theproduct with a lint free cloth along thetimber grain using medium pressure tohelp it penetrate the timber. A speedbrush works well on the large, flatsurface of a table, and a brush is handyfor hard to reach places.

Whatever method you use, it’simportant to remove any excess gelwithin a few minutes by buffing with thecloth, or you’ll end up with a film sittingon the surface, which may crack overtime and weather unsatisfactorily. Workon one small area at a time and rubwell. The brush works well betweenslats and around timber joins. Becausethe gel dries so quickly, it’s hard not tohave some brush marks showing, butthese can be remedied with a little moreproduct applied with the cloth andbuffed off.

TAKE CARE■ Don’t allow these products to come into contact withplants, stormwater outlets, streams or animals. Theycould kill aquatic life if allowed to enter the stormwatersystem. Divert all run-off to a sewer or alternativecatchment system.■ If these products come into contact with plants, washthem with lots of fresh water as soon as possible.■ Wear adequate protection.■ Don’t mix these products with any other product.■ Don’t store them in metal or rubber containers.

YOU WILL NEED■ Moss and mould killer (I used Resene Moss & MouldKiller)■ Timber and deck wash (I used Resene Timber andDeck Wash)■ Timber and furniture stain (I used Resene Timberand Furniture Gel)■ Bucket and scrubbing brush■ Protective gear – overalls, gloves and a disposablemask■ Paint brush, or speed brush, and shallow tray■ Soft, lint-free cloth

The results were stunning, and once thechair covers and backs were in place again, the setting looked as good as new.

After 48 hours, wash the product offwith lots of water. Let dry, then applythe timber and deck wash and scrubthe badly marked areas. Do this job inthe shade because you need to keepthe timber wet for 10-15 minutes. Onceagain, wash off with plenty of waterand allow the furniture to drycompletely.
