The First Computer

• The first computer was made in 1939 by John V. Atanasoff and Clifford Berry

• Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC)

Debug• Admiral Grace Hopper• Was working on a Mark

II Computer at Harvard University, her associates discovered a moth stuck in a relay

• Removed it and called it “Debugging”

The Internet

• 1957 Soviet Union Launched Sputnik 1

• 1958 Concerns of the people in the military Created The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Network

• (DARPANET)

The Analytical Engine• Important step in the

history of computers• Made by an English

Mathematician named Charles Babbage.

• Because the complexity, lack of project management science, expenses, and difficulty of accessing its value it was never built.

Herman Hollerith’s Tabulating Machine

• Used to rapidly tabulate statistics from millions of pieces of data

ENIAC• Built to calculate

artillery firing tables for the United States Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory, but its first use was in the hydrogen bomb.

• Built in secret in the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering.

• WAS HUGE!

Program

• A computer program is a sequence of instructions written to perform a specified task for a computer.

• Also called a Software Program or just a Program.

Transistors > Vacuum Tubes• Vacuum Tubes were

used to amplify music and voice.

• Made Long-distance calling practical.

• Consumed power, Created heat and burned out rapidly.

• Required high maintenance

• Transistors did not.

Microcomputer

• 1975• Ed Roberts• Altair 8800• Produced Micro

Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems.

• MITS• Ye old Microsoft :D

The Binary System

• Base-2 number system

• Represented numeric values using the symbols 0 and 1.

• Used internally by ALL modern computers
