Welcome to the Party Issue, featuring Cricket founder Justine Mills’ guide to surviving the festive season in style, and fitness guru Jane Grogan’s tips for re-balancing after burning the candle at both ends. As we head into party season, His & Hers has been
reporting from some of the North West’s most talked about events for our Social Diary pages (from p30), while award-winning networker Geniene Reese donned her highest heels to give her run-down of the must-see corporate events in the city on p32.Other highlights of the issue include our retro-chic womenswear shoot (for which we’d like to say a big thank you to the team at The Isla Gladstone for making us so welcome) from p13, and our fresh and fashionable menswear shoot from p38.From p35 we’ve rounded up a selection of skincare saviours on which the His & Hers team rely heavily to keep us looking as fresh-faced as possible throughout party season. We hope you’ll find them useful, too, at a time of year when getting the recommended eight hours’ sleep is rarely an option! If you’re craving a cheap fashion fix to instantly update your wardrobe, Women’s Style Editor Hester Brodie has found the perfect accessory for you on p17, while Men’s Style Editor Luke Trevaskis has been busy rounding up winter’s must-buy pullovers which tap into one of the season’s hottest trends. We’ll be back next month with an issue designed to take you seamlessly through the party season and into the New Year with the help of our indispensable fashion and beauty trends, predictions and events guide.

Members of leading boy-band ‘The Wanted’ will be hitting the road for their first ever UK Arena Tour in spring 2012. ‘The Wanted’, who became one of the biggest breakthrough acts of 2010 will be playing 11 arenas across the country, and most importantly (as far as His & Hers is concerned, at least!) performing at the Echo Arena Liverpool on 24 February 2012. “After the success of our first tour (which we think the mums just may have enjoyed even more than their kids) we’re planning our first arena tour for February and March of next year. We just want everyone to come along and enjoy themselves, so don your ‘The Wanted’ T-shirts and why not purchase a ticket for the show? It’ll be
spiffing!” the boys declared. Earlier this year, ‘The Wanted’ performed their first headline tour to rave reviews. Proof, if ever it was needed, that the boys are definitely not taking any prisoners when it comes to being the hottest new pop group in the UK. To book TickeTs to see ‘The Wanted’ perform live, log on to: www.echoarena.com or call the Echo Arena Box Office on 0844 8000 400.Tickets are priced from £19.50 to £27.50 and are subject to a booking / handling fee.

NadiNe, 18, StudentPrimark is a saviour for students - providing they use it well - we’re not fans of cheap car crash couture! So when we stopped Nadine to ask her about her cute outfit we were shocked when Primark was mentioned. Sticking to a soft palette of creams and browns, Nadine accessorises her outfit with over the knee socks and a tartan scarf.
Laura, 20, StudentWe heart the way 20-year-old student Laura funks up her tweed jacket with these plum-coloured republic shorts and finishes the outfit with a two-tone bag to tie in these must-have suede boots from New Look.
The temperature has dropped noticeably this month, so we’re all about keeping cosy. We hit the streets of Liverpool to see how fashionistas
were rocking cosy chic in style...

ANDREA RUSHTONHis & Hers found out how Andrea Rushton has been making waves in the traditionally male-dominated construction industry.
Working in maintenance and construction is not typically a career choice for women. Yet, Andrea Rushton, Business Manager for BH Maintenance Ltd and the Construction Training Academy is a woman on a mission to change the status quo. “Of all the people working in the construction and maintenance industry only 10% are women. And only 1% of those women are ‘on the tools’. BH Maintenance Ltd and The Construction Training Academy have been set up with the intention to educate women through enterprise in a non-traditional area; we develop the skills of women who want to work in the industry and at the same time create work experience opportunities that our students will need to thrive in a career they love.”BH Maintenance Ltd works with some of the region’s largest social landlords, offering maintenance services. They also offer home maintenance services for tenants, in particular women, who want to have the option of trades men or women to deliver the services they need.Andrea oversees the running of BH Maintenance Ltd, which often means rolling up her sleeves to help lay the foundations for a future of women in

BENNA HARRYIf you haven’t found benna.co.uk yet, then you are in for a treat. We met up with jewellery and accessories designer, Benna Harry, to talk about her inspiration as she prepares to open her studio in Liverpool’s Rodney Street.
“My passions in life are shopping and travel, and I am lucky that I can combine both in sourcing and creating exclusive ranges for the website. I like to feature things that you can’t get anywhere else and mix them with a little vintage along the way. Opening the Rodney Street Studio will allow me to create intimate events for small groups, and showcase some of the collections in a really exciting space.”
Having trained at renowned St Martin’s Art College, and spent most of her career working as a stylist in London, Benna has been able to create the perfect website and studio offering women the opportunity to have their own personal stylist to find that show-stopping piece for any outfit.
She explains that her training, combined with extensive travel, enables her to bring an eclectic feel to her unique designs, which she combines with brands like Annia Vogel, Lara Bohinc, Kenneth Jay Lane, Alex Monroe and Mawi, and a collection of divine vintage accessories that only a top stylist and fashionista could find. “I am eclectic in what I buy; I find things before they become the fashion must-have of the moment. I have worked in the fashion business for 13 years, styling shoots and videos with some of the industry’s finest names like Rankin, Girls Aloud, Catatonia and Amy Winehouse. Coming home to Liverpool, I really wanted to share that with the ladies here. My experience means I can translate catwalk looks at least a year before they hit, so it means that my clients have the ultimate fashion forecast to ensure that they are always ahead of a trend.”
It certainly sounds like Benna has her finger on the fashion pulse, and we’re sure her new studio will be a hit with the trend-conscious women of this fair city.

Cricket founder Justine Mills shares her advice for surviving the festive season in style.
Justine Mills’ Party SeaSon
Survival GuideTop Tips for Him◊ For big nights out, change up your lookinstead of making a
beeline for the pub whilethe girls get ready.
And don’t wear the samesuit you wear to work
every day!
◊ Booking taxis orarranging lifts in advance
at this busy time of yearwill pay off later in
the night.
◊ When present shopping,remember women don’t
want red lace underwear! Also, approaching a salesassistant and saying “my
girlfriend’s about your size”won’t work and will result
in disappointment onChristmas day.
◊ If you’ve left presentshopping ‘til the last
minute and can’t findanything suitable, buy a
gift voucher from a storeshe loves and present it,
nestled in tissue paper, in agift box.
www.crickeTliverpool.co.uk
Top Tips for Her ◊ You don’t need to buy a complete outfit to look on-trend for the party season. If you have a little blackdress you love, just updateit with accessories such asjewel-coloured shoes, lace tights or gloves.
◊ If you’re heading straightfrom the office to a party, swap your tote for a clutch, studs for chandelierearrings and day for nightheels and you’reready to go.
◊ Ramp up your usualparty look by 10 or 20 percent – this is the time tobe seen! If you’re out fordinner, not just cocktails, check in the store thatyour dress will look goodwhen sitting down as wellas standing up. It’ssurprising how oftenpeople forget to check this.
◊ I think it’s great whengirls compliment eachother on a night out– it feels good to givesomeone else a boost.
◊ And when it comes topresent shopping for him, don’t play it safe with giftslike ties and socks. If indoubt, get online and doyour research.

His&Hers beauty
It’s no secret that chemical peels are part of almost every celeb’s beauty arsenal, not just hiding, but actually wiping away a multitude of sins, from acne scarring and lines and wrinkles to sun damage. However, what
you may not know is that they’ve also become one of Liverpool’s most in-demand beauty treatments, appealing to women and men who want to see improvements in their skin-tone fast.
His & Hers paid a visit to Tracey Bell’s Hanover Street salon to find out why this A-list treatment’s being snapped up on the high street and to see whether you really can achieve a red carpet ready glow in your lunch-break.
After some slight nervousness over the phrase ‘chemical peel’, we were relieved to
find that the facial, which was carried out in a chic and spacious treatment room, was actually surprisingly relaxing and not at all uncomfortable (the worst you’ll have to deal with is a slight tingling sensation, which soon passes).
We’d also feared that our skin would be left looking red post-treatment, but instead we left Tracey Bell with softer, smoother and much clearer skin than when we entered the salon. This improvement lasted for around two weeks, and it’s easy to see why a host of celebrities have become hooked on regular peels to keep the visible signs of ageing and acne scarring at bay.
His & Hers verdict: We would highly recommend this treatment for almost instant anti-ageing effects.www.traceybell.co.uk

Fitness Focus
The inspiration for my first monthly column came from a recent injury I was unfortunate enough to
sustain. Knowing that I would be unable to undertake any physical exercise for several weeks came as something of a blow, not just personally but also in terms of its impact on my livelihood. When told that you can’t do something it can make you realise just how important it is and my immediate reaction was to think: “exercise is my life!”
But when my rational brain kicked in, I realised life is made up of so many different areas, and when one gives, we can spread or shift the focus to the ones that remain. This is also known as balance.
We achieve balance without realisation. Even standing is balancing. If a toe is removed our ability to stand is challenged. But we can adapt, redistribute our weight between the remaining toes and find a new way of balancing.
Now apply that same logic towards the
balance of your life. It’s such a personal mix, and by breaking it down can be achieved in every area, aimed for in every moment, day, and stage of life.
But how do we achieve this so-called balance? We all know the benefits of outweighing the negatives with the positives, but are we aware of what this actually means? In every choice we make, if we strive to achieve balance in the smaller decisions, this will surely have an impact on our bigger goals.
Moderation is the key, as is perspective, reflection and action. Make a list of all the areas in your life which are important to you, such as exercise, family and friends and consider what balance exists and ways in which you may improve it.
It’s all about a ratio, which is different for every individual. For further info or help on how to discover yours and get your balance right, please contact me at jane@one-self.co.uk

Her online shop, www.roodvintage.com will sell antique and retro fashion for men, women and children; vintage furniture, homewares and curiosities; and its profits will support social enterprise, ROOD Vintage Bizarre, set up to help local women who have suffered with mental health problems.Wayne Hemingway said: “People are realising more and more the value of vintage as a progressive way of making sure that great music, fashion, design and culture isn’t lost and old-fashioned skills are passed on.”

Free-flowing champagne and sumptuous Puschka canapés were enjoyed, whilst make-up artist Georgia Joseph worked her magic. Award-winning networker and businesswoman Geniene Reese is back with the latest from the region’s social scene.

Attacking my birthday month with force: October was very busy
on the Liverpool social scene. Bem Brasil is a favourite of mine
and is located in the now-bustling Hanover Street region of the city.
Cocktails were the drink of choice. It’s a great place to come and have an après work catch up with the girls!
After dining in style, the Little Atom Productions’ launch event, with a distinctly scientific theme, was next on the agenda. Guests were greeted by staff in white lab coats and handed colourful test tube daiquiris.
On 13th October it was my birthday, so eight of us hired out Circo’s private karaoke room (much to the dismay of the staff!), as it’s safe to say we’re all tone deaf - but much fun was had by all.
Then it was back to the Wirral for the opening weekend of the Cotton Club, a chic over-25s establishment based in the old Iron Door Club on Argyle Street, which was always a favourite venue of mine, so I was glad to find that the Cotton Club didn’t disappoint.
In between networking, I organised a women’s PA event at Novotel with sales manager, Jackie. We had a cook-off with the chef, and lots of cocktails. It was a great opportunity to showcase the hotel and get to know some of the local PAs – many of whom emailed Jackie afterwards to say what a great night they had.
In other news, exclusive club Mosquito, on Victoria Street, has been refurbished and is looking fabulous. The new Vampire Suite is ‘the’ place to be seen, so make sure you get yourself down there to check it out!
And finally, Forward Ladies Networking (www.forwardladies.com) organised a great event at John Lewis, Liverpool ONE, presented by Catherine Ames. The event showcased a woman in business from every decade. Each speaker was styled by the Laura Mercier make-up team at John Lewis and was given an outfit to model by the Damsel in a Dress label.

Piers, 31Biochemistry GraduateWith a degree in biochemistry, it is no wonder that Piers knows how to put things together. Piers teams a Ted Baker shirt with his Zara pants and jacket and comfortable M&s shoes, completing his look with a Hollister belt. With Grease currently at the empire Theatre, is this a Danny in the making?
saM, 20Biology StudentDespite a skiing accident only the previous day, sam still put his best arm forward and gave us a lesson in bandage and sling wearing. Dressed in Burtons from the waist down, and an H&M T-shirt, sam’s love of sports is evidenced by his royal Climbing Club gilet – a great way to add personality to any look.

CoLin, 24Marketing, Silverberg opticiansWith an eye for detail, it is clear who sets the style stakes in silverberg optician’s office. Colin pairs a Zegna shirt with pants from reiss and a vintage trench coat. His Gucci shoes and Tom Ford glasses are testament to the practicality of wearing designers to work - i have a feeling optometry may be my next career.
Brian, 20Footballer not only comfortable on the pitch, Brian shows Liverpool how to do ‘cool and subtle’ in winter. With his Chukka shoes from urban outfitters, H&M jeans and resurrection jumper and shirt, this look is finished with a warm hat – an ensemble i would recommend to the masses.
Tony, 20History Studentafter featuring our history student sam in the last issue, i didn’t think historians could get any more stylish until i met this Greek fashionista. Working in Ted Baker, it is no surprise that every part of his outfit reflected the brand. Maybe one of these more stylish new generation history students will be our next David starkey!
WiLL, 17StudentHaving come from Wales for Liverpool’s shopping buzz, Will hit the streets early to make the most of his trip. in his Topman jumper, river island scarf, Primark jeans and all saints boots, his look is simple but stylish – good job we caught up with him before he was laden with shopping bags.
