'toilets or restroom as social space'

Project Description: The newly completed upgraded laybys are located southwards along the North-South Expressway. The existing laybys were without adequate facilities. Due to the increase of traffic volume, more proper facilities are required. These includes new restrooms (toilets) and wakafs. A new image with additional requirements such as user friendly facilities is required by the client

Layering of Space

Introduction: The public toilet convenience or conveniences, though a humble instrument is a microcosm of society at large. It is a functional instrument, social expressions, economic developments, cultural character, hygiene standards and environmental factors. The neglect in the architectural design aspect such as the handicapped, privacy, ventilation, comfort, security and culture has added to the deterioration of its function. Poor toilet design and management, user's habits and etiquettes shows the slice of the peoples morality and the spiritual culture of that country. Concept …a perception of change from the norm. A new direction and character in public conveniences should be established for the future needs. This typology of restroom will exist with good design approach, public education on usage and good maintenance and health management.

Skylights for natural sunlight : savings in energy and cost, induces air movement and promotes drying of floor by direct sunlight penetration to the floor.

Semi-open courtyard and openings for natural air flow. Good air-movement from outside to inside reduces the smell within. Design incorporates floor vents.

The landscape area acts as an intermediate space between outdoors and indoors. Sitting benches at landscaped areas provide a place to wait or rest. Plants create a sense fresh and cool environment.
