NEWS RELEASE

Expansion joints built for a GE test facility extended thelimits of expansion joint design. In the most extremecases, the expansion joints were designed to handle acompressible fluid at 1400OF pressurized to 650 psig.Based upon an experience search performed by GE andSenior Flexonics Pathway, this combination of pressureand temperature had never before been incorporated intothe design of an expansion joint.

The expansion joints were hinge and gimbal type con-struction with floating ring type hardware attachments tominimize thermal stresses. The combination of high tem-perature and high pressure required the use of materialswith excellent resistance to creep at high temperature.Alloy 617 was used for the pipe and certain highlystressed weldments and Alloy 230 was used for the bel-lows. All the bellows were reinforced with alloy rings toprovide the necessary hoop strength at the operatingTo find out more about high temperature design capabili-ties, contact Senior Flexonics Pathway.

HIGH TEMPERATURE, HIGH PRESSURE EXPANSION JOINTS

NR 54

FURNISHED FOR GE TEST FACILITY

10” diameter gimbal expansion joint with floatinghardware designed for 650 psig at 1400o F. The spacebetween the floating rings and the pipe is filled withinsulation to reduce the operating temperature of the ringsand increase the allowable stress in the ring material.

6” diameter hinged expansion joint designed for 650psig at 1400oF.

20” diameter hinged expansion joint with floatinghardware designed for 650 psig at 1400oF. The designhydrostatic test pressure was 1395 psig. At the operatingcondition, the hinges restrain a pressure thrust force of282,000 lbs. The end of the floating ring has a key slot toallow for expansion of the pipe while providing torsionalrestraint for the key structure.
