Heriot-WattYearofRobotics2017SponsorshipProposalBackgroundHeriot-Wattisconductingworld-classroboticstrainingandresearchandaimstobeattheforefrontofthistechnology.Throughinnovativecollaborationsandstudy,theUniversityiscultivatingthefutureleadersinthefield.Tocelebratethis,theUniversitywillhostthe‘Heriot-WattYearofRobotics’in2017.Heriot-WattiskeentoencouragecompaniesandcorporationstopartnerwiththeUniversity’srecognisedbrandasasponsorfortheYearofRobotics.Indoingso,sponsorswillalignthemselveswithcuttingedge,innovativetechnologythatultimatelysupportsgreateractivityintheglobaleconomywhilesimultaneouslyinspiringthepublicbyincreasingtheirknowledgeandunderstandingofrobotics.TheContextRobotsareincreasinglyinourhospitals,homes,officesandmore.Nowisthetimetoengagewiththemanddiscovertheirpotential.TheHeriot-WattYearofRoboticsprovidesanidealsettingforHeriot-Watttoengageabroadrangeofcompaniesandindividualsbuildingonexistingnetworksaswellascreatingnewrelationships.Thenationalprofileofourroboticsandartificialintelligenceresearch,coupledwithourwideruniversityoffering,studentpopulation,alumnibaseandourglobalreachmakesHeriot-Wattanattractivepropositiontopotentialsponsors.TheUniversityhasaround30,000studentsstudyingacrossourcampuses,distancelearningandviaaccreditedlearningpartnersacrosstheworld.Wehaveover100,000alumniglobally.OurEdinburghcampusishometoc9000studentsand1,743fulltimeequivalentstaff.Thissignificantstudent,staffandalumnipopulationcombinedwithourconnectionswithlocalcommunitiesandthewidercityformsasignificantcontextforpotentialsponsors.RoboticsresearchisoneofthehottestnewmarketsintechandwasidentifiedbytheUKGovernmentin2012asoneofthe‘EightGreatTechnologies’thatwilldriveeffortstorebalancetheUKeconomy.AHouseofCommonscommitteereport1publishedinSeptember2016,acknowledgedthat“AdvancesinroboticsandArtificialIntelligence(AI)holdthepotentialtofundamentallyreshapethewayweliveandwork.YettheGovernmentdoesnotyethaveastrategyfordevelopingthenewskillscitizenswillneedtoflourishinaworldwhereAIismoreprevalent,orrespondingtothesocialandethicaldilemmasitposes.”Heriot-Watt’sstrongresearchbaseinrobotics,AIandhuman-robotinteraction,whichhassignificantcommercialinterestandresearchfunding,meantheUniversityisuniquelyplacedtoinformtheUKandglobalsocietyaboutrobotics’opportunities,advancesandpotential.
