Allahabad: In a judgment th-at questions the UP governm-ent’s land acquisition policybut showers relief on at least50,000 home buyers, the Alla-habad High Court on Fridayquashed the land acquisitionin three villages in the Noidaarea but cleared the takeoverof land in 60 other villages onthe condition that farmersare paid 64.7% more as comp-ensation for the land acquir-ed from them and given 10%of the developed land (not ex-ceeding 2,500 sq m).

Mumbai: Airlines are having a blast this Diw-ali. With most flights packed to capacity andthe rush for tickets rising with it being the wee-kend ahead of the festival, carriers have hikedfares by at least three folds in most sectors.

One-way tickets to cities like Delhi, Kolka-ta, Jaipur and Thiruvananthapuram went forup to Rs 32,000 on Saturday. Not just the soaringrates, tour operators say those making last-minute plans may not even get direct flights tothe destinations of their choice.

According to the operators, the runaway fa-res, however, have not deterred those planningto take a few days off during the weekend. Whi-

le domestic destinations are a favourite at thistime of the year, places like Singapore, Thaila-nd, Malaysia and even Turkey and Croatia arealso drawing a number of Indian holiday-mak-ers. In fact, so high is the demand that fares tothese places too have skyrocketed by about30%, with even LCCs having a dhamaka. P 6

New Delhi: Despite impressive growth, Gujarat has notbeen able to reduce malnourishment levels, while UttarPradesh and Bihar, among the most backward in the coun-try, have done better in improving the lot of their margi-nalized Dalits and tribals. These are some of the conclus-ions of the India Human Development Report 2011, relea-sed by the Centre on Friday.

According to the report, high rates of child malnutriti-on were a major concern. It said Gujarat was among theworst performers, with 69.7% kids up to 5 being anaemic

and 44.6% suffering fr-om malnutrition, provi-ng that high economic

growth was no guarantor of an improvement in health. Complimenting opposition chief ministers Nitish Ku-

mar and Mayawati, the report said, “It is worth citing theprogress achieved by two of the economically backwardstates of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.” It went further in endo-rsing the brand of politics the two chief ministers have un-dertaken, noting that social movements have helped in bet-ter performance of deprived classes.

The four drunks retreated,only to return minutes laterwith, according to one accou-nt, a dozen more men. The lar-ge gang first assaulted Sentosand his male friends—RubinFernandes, Avinash Bali andBenjamin Fernandes—andthen stabbed him and Rubin.Sentos died soon after in a hos-pital. Rubin, a student, is stillcritical.

Mumbai: The National Con-sumer Disputes RedressalCommission (NCDRC) on Fr-iday ordered that a compens-ation amount of Rs 1.73 croreshould be paid to the US-bas-ed husband of a child psych-ologist who died in Mumbaidue to medical negligence.

dered by the commission forsuch negligence. Howeverthe three guilty doctors and ahospital, all Kolkata-based,will have to pay only Rs 1.34crore after reductions order-ed by the Supreme Court.
