The Food Pyramid

GRAINS VEGETABLES FRUITS OILS DAIRY MEAT

What is the food pyramid? The food pyramid tells people the proper amount of

things they should eat. It includes: Grains, Vegetables, Fruits, Oils, Dairy and Meat and Beans. The bigger the area for each category, the more of it you should eat daily. The steps on the side of the pyramid are meant to show the importance of exercising.

The Grain Group is an important part of our daily diet because it provides us with the important Carbohydrates and Fiber that we need.

Carbohydrates - are an important source that our bodies use to produce energy that we need to be active.

Fiber - is important for regular digestion. Enriched grains also contain Iron and Vitimin B.

The Vegetable Group is important because it contains a variety of vitamins and nutrients that are important for the bodies health, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Every Vegetable has a different amount and variety of these nutrients so it is important that you eat a variety each day.

Vitamin A and Vitamin C - are important because they help heal cuts, they help night vision, and they keep your skin healthy.

Every vegetable is a source of Fiber.

The Fruit Group is important because it contains a variety of vitamins and nutrients that are important for the bodies health, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

Every fruit has a different amount and variety of these nutrients so it is important that you eat a variety each day.

Citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruits and also strawberries are a great source of Vitamin C.

Apricots and cantaloupes are a good source of Vitamin A.

Vitamin C is very beneficial to your immune system. Some fruits such as cranberries, help organs like the kidneys.

Every fruit provides Fiber.

The Meat Group contains food from both plants and animals, which are excellent sources of both protein and iron.

Protein helps build strong muscles and helps repair and build new body tissue.

Iron, which is used in the red blood cells, caries oxygen to all parts of the body.

The Dairy Group is important because of its main nutrient, Calcium, which is essential for keeping your bones and teeth strong and healthy.

Calcium builds almost half of the bone mass needed. As the bones grow and become denser and stronger,

they need extra calcium to remain healthy.

Foods that don't fit into the other Five Food Groups are in the Oils Category.

These foods provide a lot of flavor and taste, but they usually don’t provide the nutrients that we need.

These types of foods are usually much higher in calories and fats compared to the amounts of nutrients they contain.

Only eat these types of foods sometimes, also make sure you don't eat these in the place of the other Five Food Groups.
