thought this was a lot of money!

Antacids/Acid Blockers

Antacids neutralize stomach acid

Acid Blockers stop or reduce

acid production in the

stomach

Also Available: Nexium for Kids

• In 2008, FDA approved Nexium to treat GERD

(gastroesophageal reflux disease) in kids as

young as 12 months old

• Most common side effects in children:

– Headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, gas,

constipation, dry mouth, sleepiness

Stomach acid is not the enemy!

• Do you know what happens when you take away stomach acid?

– Food is not digested properly, especially protein

• Interferes with calcium, B12 and iron absorption

• One study documented over 40% reduction in calcium absorption when taking Prilosec

• Undigested protein in the intestines can act as allergens

• Increased risk of bacterial and viral exposure

• What does this mean for you?

• Taking an acid-blocker or acid reducing medication can cause more problems than it “cures”

Still Not Sure about Acid Blockers?

• Recent study results:

– women taking acid blockers 25% more likely to break a bone

– Women with hip fracture are 62% more likely to have used acid blockers long term

– Elderly patients using acid blockers were 2.5 times more likely to have memory problems

• Probably due to poor absorption of B12

– 30% increased risk of pneumonia

– 50-75% more likely to contract bacterial infection when hospitalized for other problems

Is Too Much Stomach Acid Really Your

Problem?

• No!

• Many people UNDER produce stomach acid

• Too much acidic food and too little stomach

acid…

– Food isn’t breaking down properly

– Fills up the stomach and ferments, which causes

– HEARTBURN

How To Repair Digestion

Without

Turning Off Stomach Acid

D-limonene

• Found in the peels of citrus fruits

– orange/lemon smell is due to d-limonene

• Medicinal properties

– Anticancer

– Relieves heartburn

D-limonene: How Does it Work?

• Coats the Esophagus– minor burps carry d-limonene from the stomach to the esophagus;

protects it against caustic contents that would have otherwise been regurgitated from the stomach

• Stimulates digestion– Stomach contents move into the intestines promptly – less likely to reflux

back out of the stomach so that these esophageal irritants do not promote as much reflux.

• Protects the stomach lining– provides a barrier in the stomach and esophagus against bacterial infection

(H. pylori bacteria)

• Reduces the amount of gastric juices that reflux back into the esophagus

Clinical Research

• Adults with a history (at least 5 years) of mild to moderate symptoms of heartburn or GERD

• At beginning of study, rated their pain as a 5 on a 10 point scale (1 = pain free, 10 = severe pain)

• By the second day of taking D-limonene, 32% of the participants experienced symptom relief, rating their pain at 1 or 2.

• After 14 days, 89% of the participants were symptom free!

• In a second, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 13 participants followed the same symptom severity scale

– Day 4: 29% in the D-limonene group experienced significant relief (a 1 to 2 rating), versus zero in the placebo group

– Day 14: 86% of the D-limonene group reported complete relief

Sea Buckthorn

• Edible berries are “nutrient bombs”

– More than 200 bioactive compounds

– Omega fatty acids, including omega 7

• Relieves dryness and reduces

inflammation

• Regenerates skin and mucous membranes

– Mucous membranes line the stomach and

intestines

Clinical Research

• Peptic ulcer

– Patients took sea buckthorn oil (capsules) for one

month

– 76% of participants experienced significant healing

of their ulcers

– Overall effectiveness rate was 96%

– Sea buckthorn oil accelerated the healing process

of damaged tissues

Additional Support for Healing Digestion: DGL

• Deglycyrrhizinated Licorice

– Glycyrrhizin, which can cause adverse effects when licorice is used at high doses, has been removed

• Works against H. pylori

– H. pyloria damages the lining of the stomach/intestines

• Protects against the damaging effects of aspirin and ibuprofen

• Helps protect against ulcers and speed their healing

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra )

Clinical Results

• Specialized DGL – does not have to be chewed

– Effective at a smaller dosage

• Randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled trial

• Individuals with dyspepsia (upset stomach or indigestion) received 75mg or 150 mg of the special DGL twice daily

• At 15 days and again at 30 days, participants in both DGL groups showed significantly decreased symptoms, including reduced heartburn, early satiety (that uncomfortable feeling of being “overfull” even at the beginning of a meal), regurgitation, nausea, and bloating.

Ravindra KR. Efficacy of an extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra in patients with functional dyspepsia: a

randomized, double blind, placebo controlled study. Bangalore, India. 2010.

Probiotics

• Friendly bacteria

• Suppress the growth of harmful bacteria such as H. pylori

• Prevent H. pylori from adhering to the lining of the intestinal tract

• Increase healing rate of ulcers and strengthen the gastric mucosa

• Key strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus,

Bifidobacterium longum,

Bifidobacterium lactus, Bifidobacterium

bifidum

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Additional Benefits

• Reduce gas and bloating

• Decrease risk of cancer (especially colon

cancer)

• Helps alleviate constipation/diarrhea

Betaine HCl

• Can be used to increase acidity of the stomach

• Take with meals to promote digestion,

especially protein digestion

• Start small and increase the

dosage gradually…

Digestive Enzymes

• Naturally produced in the body

• Additional, animal-sourced, enzymes can

relieve many common digestive problems

when taken with meals

– Reduce: gas, bloating, indigestion, heartburn,

constipation and diarrhea

• Taken between meals, enzymes can aid in

reducing inflammation and are beneficial for

arthritis and cancer

Recap

• To treat heartburn:

– Restore stomach acidity with Betaine

Hydrochloride

– Reduce symptoms with D-limonene and sea

buckthorn oil

• Heal ulcers and treat H. pylori with DGL and

probiotics

• Take enzymes to meals to relieve other

common digestive problems
