Hall Of Fame

: How it works

• Air is drawn in

• Air is accelerated

: How it works

• Air is induced

• Air is entrained

Comparison

Conventional Fan

• Fast-spinning blades guarded by a safety grille.

Dyson Fan

• No Blades and it’s safe

Conventional Fan

• Complicated to dismantle and clean

Dyson Fan

• Very easy to clean

Conventional Fan

• Limited speed control settings

Dyson Fan

• Dimmer switch control to precisely adjust airflow

Conventional Fan

• Awkward to adjust

Dyson Fan

• Touch tilt

• Visibility: The controls for different operations are clearly visible like on/off, Airflow control and Oscillation control indicating what can be done.

• Feedback: There is an immediate feedback. By clicking any of

the three buttons you can see their functionality immediately.

• Constraints: The on/off and oscillation controls look identical but the labels may help.

• Consistency: As the interface is very simple with limited number of operations, separate buttons are used to map different operations. Here, all the user has to do is learn what each button represents and select accordingly.

Hall of Shame

Turning Technologies “Clicker”

InputNumbers for answering

Go? Do I press this to complete my answering?

Poor Standardization: Sometimes “GO,” sometimes “Ch.”

?

FeedbackNot very good, three options:

Green “Yellow” Red

• Did my input get counted?• Is something wrong?

Analysis

• Affordances: Good – Buttons are for pushing!• Visibility: Good – We can see all of our options• Mapping: Left up to user• Gulf of Exec.: Good, unless something’s wrong• Gulf of Eval.: Bad – What does a flashing light mean? What

does a red light mean? What does green mean?• Knowledge Use: Requires training and memory to properly

set channel, multiple usable channels causes confusion

Conclusion: The design of the Turing Technologies “audience response system” is simple, but deceptively difficult to use.
