UKBAP priority habitat

Brownfield or Open Mosaic Habitats on Previously Developed Land (OMHPDL) is now a UKBAP priority habitat. Criteria for site includes:

1) At least 0.25ha

2) Known history of disturbance

3) Contains early successional communities – annuals, mosses, lichens, ruderals, flower rich grassland, heath, short sward

4) Loose bare ground

5) Spatial variation forming a mosaic

Bare ground

heats up rapidly

Short vegetation

lots of flowering plants

Early successional

ruderal & scrub

South facing slope

Mid-late successional

young trees and bushes

Seasonal pond

Shelter belt

Diverse mosaic of invertebrate habitats

and micro-habitats

Lichens & mosses

Scottish Vacant and

Derelict Register

Funding from CSGN

development fund and

SNH

Assessed ‘derelict’ land

on register

CSGN area: 1248 sites

Ex CSGN area: 274 sites
