Guildford Bridges Restoration

”This was a job well done in challenging circumstances. We thank you for the speedy and successful renovation of an important and very visible part of Guildford’s physical infrastructure”

Surrey County Council recognised the need to restore both Onslow Bridge

and Town Bridge in the centre of Guildford town. Both of the central structures

had become extremely tired and worn looking with seven layers of flaky and

discoloured paintwork subjected to years of weathering.

This project fell within the existing highways contract in the safe hands of Kier

Services. Having a successful long-term relationship with both Surrey County

Council and Kier, our proposal for the safe restoration of the two historical bridges

was accepted and we were thrilled to receive the instruction for this exciting

project.

• Bollards• Soffits• Pigeon prevention• Crests and plaques• Brick cleaning & graffiti removal

The outcome

”Community Cleans professionalism and quality of work helped fulfil the contract in spite of the delays caused by poor weather and flooding. It was great to see it all coming together within the original schedule”

The challenge

What did we do

Despite volatile weather conditions and severe flooding, both Onslow and Town

bridges were fully refurbished to a high standard, on budget and on time.

Both Surrey County Council and Guildford Borough Council were so pleased

with the completed transformation they held a reopening ceremony for both

bridges.

Restoring

• Bridge lattice works• Lamps and lamp columns• Bridge parapets• Fitting of inspection walkway• Minor pavement repairs

Due to the central location of the busy bridges within Guildford; road, waterway

and pedestrian traffic management was key. Our Street Works trained operatives

ensured there was minimal disruption throughout the duration of the project.

All aspects of the bridges required expert attention including:

We got straight to work using the effective Microstrip system to remove the seven

previous layers of paint and rust, stripping back to the original surface. Careful

procedures were followed to ensure that no waste fell into the watercourse.

Our ICATS trained professionals were then able to apply the paint system

effectively to ensure a 10 year guarantee. Our resident artist was called in for the

finer paint aspects of the job which included the detailed crests and plaques on

both bridges.
