Page14Statement 6: Economics at Cambridge IfirstbecameawareoftheimportanceofEconomicswhenIrepresentedIraqataModelUnitedNationsconferenceinEdinburgh.Idebatedissuesrangingfromtheproblemofaiddependencetotheeconomicimpactofterrorism,andwonthe“BestDelegate”awardintheEconomicsCommittee.Sincethen,IhaveextendedmyknowledgeofdifferentareasofEconomicsbyreadingtheFinancialTimesandTheEconomist,andbyattendingopenlecturesattheLSEandRSA.Inmygapyear,IamworkingasaneconomicresearchassistantfortheInternationalGrowthCentre(attheinvitationofProfessorTimBesley)inateamplanningtomeasureprivatereturnstoeducation,withtheexcitingpossibilityofundertakingfieldworkinIndia.MyinterestinGameTheoryasamethodforunderstandingstrategicdecision-makingencouragedmetoread‘TheArtofStrategy’byDixitandNalebuff.IamintriguedbyhowempiricalevidenceseemstorefutetheassumptionsofRationalChoiceTheory,leadingustoquestionhowrationalweareandhowusefultheassumptionofself-interestis,giventhestrongsocial,culturalandmoralinfluencespromotingaltruism.GameTheoryalsoappealstomebecauseitprovidesanopportunitytousemyaptitudeforMathematicstoanalyseeconomicproblems.Iamworkingthrough‘MathematicsforEconomicsandBusiness’byIanJacques,andhaveenjoyedapplyingcalculustoproblemssuchasthoseencounteredinconstrainedoptimization.IameagertodevelopmyMathematicalskillsandtheirapplicationtoEconomicsatUniversity.Recentturmoilintheglobaleconomyledmetoread'AnimalSpirits'byAkerlofandShiller,whichintroducedmetotheintriguingmannerinwhichpsychologyaffectstheperformanceofthemacroeconomy.InmyessayfortheRESYoungEconomistoftheYearCompetition,entitled"AreEconomicRecessionsInevitable?”Iarguedthattherewasconvincingevidencetosuggestthatunderlyingpsychologicalfactors,ratherthanpolicyfailures,causethebusinesscycle.Sincethen,Ihavebeguntoexplorerivaltheoriesofbusinesscycles,includingKeynesian,MonetaristandAustrianideas.AmartyaSen’s‘DevelopmentasFreedom’sparkedmyinterestintheroleofeconomicandsociallibertiestoincreasetheadvancementofpoorcountries,viathemarketmechanism.However,Ifoundthatmuchdebatesurroundingdevelopmentisconcernedwiththetimeframeinwhichtransitionstowardsmarket-basedeconomiesoccur,ratherthansimplyevaluatingthebenefitsoffreemarkets.Thedevelopmentofsocialcapitalappearstobeachallengingbutessentialpartofthisprocess.Mybeliefthatitisnecessarytoadoptabottom-upapproachtoimprovinglivingstandardsofcitizensindevelopingcountrieswasreinforcedbyreading‘TheWhiteMan’sBurden’byWilliamEasterly.Myinterestinmicrofinancecamefromreconcilingthisapproachtodevelopmentwiththeimprovementofeconomicfreedomsandmyentryformyschool’sEconomicsessayprizefocusedontherecentgrowthinmicrofinancetofundsmallIndianbusinesses.Iconcludedthatregulationofmicrofinancelendingshouldbeincreasedtoensurethatcreditbubblesdonotgrow,burstandcausehavoc,astheyhavedoneinthedevelopedworld.Inmyview,educationisthebestremedyavailabletoimprovegloballivingstandards.ThroughmountaineeringexpeditionstotheHimalayasandtheAndes,Ihaveraised$12000tohelpeducateorphangirlsfromtheMasaaitribeinTanzania.IwillbeteachinginTanzaniaforthreemonthsfromnextApril.Asthesecretaryofmyschool’sEconomicsSociety,Isoughtoutinspiringspeakersfromvariedacademicandbusinessbackgroundstoenthusebuddingeconomistsfromseverallocalschools.Thisexperiencehashelpedtodevelopmyorganisationalandtimemanagementskills.Iamkeentomakethemostoftheopportunitiesthatauniversityeducationcanoffer,andhopeonedaytopursueacareerinacademia.
