• The approach to ‘uses and gratification’ was formed by a couple called Bumler and Katz’s. They believe that users play a active role in choosing and using media.

• The user has 4 basic needs:• Diversion • Personal relationships• Personal identity • Surveillance

• Diversion • The need to escape from everyday life, and to relax.• Personal Relationships• People use the media to form a relationship with others and to be part of a social group.• Personal Identity • We tend to use media to compare ourselves to other people and live up to role models. This

helps us identify with ourselves.• Surveillance using the media to find out what is going on around us e.g.. A magazine or the

radio.

Personal relationshipNME is one of the most famous magazines around. Reading NME creates a community/ friendships as it allows you to speak to similar people with the same interests

Personal identityMany people compare themselves to artists such as Rhianna as they dress in a similar style ect Surveillance

NME let us get the low down on celebrities life styles for example rihianas on the front page and is a main story
