Who We AreThe Global Studies Student Association is a student group associated with the Institute for Global Studies and is composed mainly of Global Studies majors. GSSA is committed to social justice, community service, and international development. We take active steps towards creating positive change in the global community. Our mission involves service projects in support of a cause voted on by our group annually.

Hogar de Niños Tierra Santa

HNTS is a non-denominational, non-profit organization founded in 1986 for the protection and care of abandoned, abused and orphaned children.

The mission of HNTS is to:* Provide the children with a nurturing, stimulating

and safe environment* Encourage and challenge our children to pursue a

path towards excellence through education * Treat each child as a unique individual rich in

talents and capabilities Currently Hogar de Niños Tierra Santa is home to almost

150 children

Past Projects In 2007/2008 GSSA raised

$26,000 through various fundraising projects in support of Hogar de Ninos Tierra Santa in Villa de San Antonio, Honduras

The money that GSSA donated funded the construction and purchase of an on-site water sanitation plant.

The twelve students in GSSA traveled to Honduras in May of 2008 to engage in service projects for the orphanage in the areas of education, construction, and child care.

Goals To obtain a better and more personal

understanding of Honduran culture and society. To gain new insights in the areas of international

development, sustainable agriculture, and primary education.

To raise funds to support Hogar de Ninos Tierra Santa and to fund on site projects during trip to Honduras in May of 2009.

To assist the organization, Hogar de Niños Tierra Santa, as best we can through whatever methods are most effective and pertinent to its needs. • Method was simple = ask first!

Current Projects

The twelve students in GSSA will travel to la Villa de San Antonio, Honduras for three weeks beginning in May of 2009 to carry out service projects to benefit Hogar de Niños Tierra Santa in the areas of:

- Health- Medico/ Health Assessment

- Education- Afterschool Programming- Sustainable Agriculture

Agricultural Development Initiative

In collaboration with the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences we will bring student professionals to the orphanage to improve their existing sustainable farming initiative through:

- Crop diversification- Irrigation- Continue organic self-sustaining

agriculture- Long-term relationship with NGO’s and

Colleges in Honduras to ensure sustainability of project
