Grant’s successful push down Mississippi left onlyone major CSA stronghold - Vicksburg His forcessurround the city(blockade)for 6 weeks

No food or supplies came in and the Confederates ran out of foodResorted to eating dogs and rats!!

CSA forced to surrender on July 4, 1863

Victory give Union control of the Mississippi River

Cut off Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas from rest of Confederacy (split Confederacy in two)

Lee was hoping to achieve a victory on Union soil

June 1863 Lee crosses into PA heading for Harrisburg (a railroad center) but ran into Union troops in the small town of Gettysburg

Pickett’s Charge- Direct assault on middle of the Union line- Disaster for Confederacy- By the end of the battle over 1/3 of Lee’s army is crushed- Leads to CSA retreat
