Gérard Genette Gérard Genette (born 1930

– Paris ) is a French literary theorist, associated in particular with the structuralist movement and such figures as Roland Barthes and Claude Lévi-Strauss, from whom he adapted the concept of bricolage.

He received his professorship in French literature at the Sorbonne in1967.

What Is Narratology ?

Narratology is a humanities discipline dedicated to the study of the logic, principles, and practices of narrative representation. Dominated by structuralist approaches at its beginning, narratology has developed into a variety of theories, concepts, and analytic procedures.

Important concept in Genette’s narratology

Genette ’s narratology is derived from Narrative Discourse An Essay in Method.

Five main concepts used by Genette in narratology

That five aspects are: Order, Frequency, Duration ,Voice,

Mood.

Order Order : Order is the relation

between the sequencing of event in the story and their arrangement in the narrative.

A murder discovered by detective {A} ,the circumstances of the murder are revealed {B}, lastly murderer is caught {C}.

Events done this way A1, B2, C3 discovery flashback and resolution goes with B1,A2,and C3

These disarrangements on the level of order are termed ‘anachrony ’ .

Frequency Frequency goes with

separation between event and its narration allows with four possibilities

An event can occur once and be narrated once (singular).

An event can occur times and narrated once (iterative)

An event can occurs once and narrated times (repetitive)

An event can occur n times be narrated n times (multiple)

Duration

The separation between an events and its narration.

Two elements are main in duration, 1) discourse time and 2) narrative time.

It is usually hard to define exactly the duration of an event within a narrative.

Ex: Ulysses has relatively short narrative time 24 hours. Not many people but however could read Ulysses in24 hours .Thus it is safe to say it has a lengthy discourse.

Voice

Voice is concerned with who narrates, and from where. This can be split four ways.

1- Intra- diegetic 2- Extra- diegetic

Is the narrator a character in the story?

Hetero-diegetic: the narrator is not a character in the story.

BR Chopra’s video of Mahabharata .

Main Samay Hoon,

Homo-diegetic: the narrator is a character in the story

Mood

Genette said narrative mode is dependent on the 'distance' and 'perspective' of the narrator, and like music, narrative mode has predominant patterns. It is related to voice.

Distance of the narrator changes with narrated speech, transposed speech and reported speech.

Mood is at some extent related with voice perspective of the narrator or director is known as focalization
