Glo-Fish

The Science1) Extract DNA from both

organisms2) Expose each organism’s

DNA to the same restrictive enzyme

3) Insert the desired gene from one organism into the DNA of the other organism.

4) Add ligase to create recombinant DNA.

Should Plants Be Genetically Modified?

What We Can Create• Drought, frost, disease,

and herbicide resistant crops

• Plants that produce their own insecticides, vitamins, and medicines

• Combinations of two different species

• Larger plants or crops

Advantages

• Decreased hunger in third world countries: hardier plants, increased crop production, higher diversity of foods to eat

• Increased health benefits: vitamins and medicines produced from plants, less herbicides and insecticides sprayed

Disadvantages• Much is unknown about

this new technology so huge negative impacts could affect the environment and the Earth

• Loss of the natural • New allergens or

activation of them is possible

As well as…

Company Corruption• Seeds that are sterile after only one

season so farmers cannot save some of their seed for the next year

• Arguments about patents

• Monsanto monopoly

Genetic Pollution• Genetically modified

organisms may be better suited to living in their environment and could wipe out all natural organisms and plants.

Bt Crops• Bt crops produce their own

poisonous insecticide. Such as Bt cotton where the cotton bollworm is killed when it eats the boll capsule of the cotton plant.

• Adv: Less insecticide spraying• Disadv: Insects resistant to

insecticides, killing a lot of insect species off, reducing animal diversity.

RoundUp Ready Crops• Adv: Farmers can spray herbicide without

harming their crops so weeds die and plants get more nutrients.

• Disadv: Herbicide still must be used and their ingestion may harm our bodies.
