GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR LAPBOOK Theselapbookpatternsare“modular”indesign.Eachprojectfitsintoeitheronehalfofapageoronequarterofapage.Thismakesiteasytomixandmatch(andtoaddyourownideas,too).Youdon’thavetospendmuchtimeplanningtheoveralldesignofthebook.Youalreadyknowevery-thingwillfit.Abitpredictable,yes,butveryeasy.Afewpossiblearrangementareshownhere.

It’suptoyouhowtomaketheblanklapbook.Youcanusecardboard,posterboard,cardstock(veryheavypaper),filefolders,oranythingelseyouhaveonhand.It’salsouptoyoutodecidehowcomplextomakeit.Youcandojusttwopagesthatopenuplikebook,youcanmakeatri-fold,oryoucandosomethingfancywithflapsthatfoldinfromthetopandbottom.Youcanmakeitallonepieceoryoucanuseindividualpanelswithtapedseams.

NOTE:Inthepatternsthatfollow,theoutsidedimensionsareslightlysmallerthanahalf-pageoraquarter-page,sothatthereisabitof“breathingroom,”sotospeak,betweentheprojects.Theprojectsshouldnottoucheachotherwhentheyaregluedintoplace.Youmightwanttokeepthisinmindifyoudecidetoaddyourownprojects.

What to do: Cutoutbothlongrectangles.Cuttheflapsusingasharpknifeorrazorblade.Applygluestickverycarefullytothebackoftheflappage,makingsureyouwon’tgetanyglueonthebacksoftheflaps.Sticktheflappageontothepicturepage.(Addcolorifyouwish.) Option:Printtwocopiesofthepage,oneoncoloredpaper(Irecommendapastelcolor)andoneonwhite.Usethecoloredflaprectangleandthewhitepicturerectangle.Thecoloredflapswillcontrastnicelywithwhitepicturesunderneath. alternative method of assembly: Ifcutting(orpre-cutting)theflapswithasharpknifeisnotanoptionforyou,justcutouttheflapsfromtheflappage,leavingsomeextraspaceatthetopofeachflap.Pastetheflaps(withglueonjustthetopedges!)overthecorrectpicturesonthepicturepage.Cutoutthetitleandtransferittothetopofthepicturepage.Theflapswon’tstayflatquiteaswellusingthismethod,butthisisaminorproblemconsideringthatitwouldpossiblywillallowtheprojecttobedoneentirelybythestudent(s).

Flowersareaverypopularthemeforstamps.Ifpossible,lookatsomerealstampsthatfeatureflowers.Thenchooseyourfavoriteflowerandmakeitintoastamp.Don’tforgettoincludeinyourdesignthenameofthecountry(doesn’thavetobeyourcountry!)andthenumberofcentsthestampisworth.

Punchasmallholeinthetwocenterdots(middleofwheelandmiddleoftrunk).Putthewheelbehindthetrunkpage,matchupthecentersandsecurewithapaperfastener.Sliptheedgeofthewheelthroughtheslitonthesideofthetrunk.

Cutonthesolidlineandfoldonthedottedlines.CuttheslotlineatthebottomwithanX-actobladeorarazorblade. TIP:Ifyouareworkingwithheavypaper,scoringonthedottedlineswillmakethemmucheasiertofold.Toscorethepaper,layaruleralongthelineandruneitherthescissorbladeortheX-actobladeVERYLIGHTLYalongtheline,justenoughtoscratchthepaperbutnotcutit. Foldtheenvelopealongthemiddleline,thenfoldtheedgesaroundtothebackandgluetheminplace.Ifyouareusingliquidglue,don’tusetoomuch.Noleakingorseeping!Ifyouareusingagluestick,useplenty. Foldthetopflapovertothefront.Thehalf-circleshouldtuckintotheslot. Youcandecorateorlabeltheenvelopeinwhateverwayisappropriateforthecontents.

Foldthebackgroundrectangleinhalf.Makefoldlineswhereindictedonthecrosssectionrectangle.Noticethatthethincrosssectionofthecuticleappearsonthefrontsideofthepopup.Gluetheflapsasindicated,sothattheyareontheinsideofthepopup(notvisible).Beforethegluedriescompletely,foldthepopupinhalfandmakesureitwillcloseproperly.Adjusttheflapsifitdoesnot.(Or,adjustthefoldlineonthecornerthatsticksout.)

how it works: Startwiththeword“lobed.”Findthepicturethatyouthinkmatchesthiswordandpullthestringsothatitgoesthroughthenotchnexttothatpicture.Windthestringaroundthebackandthenupthroughthenotchnexttotheword“linear.”Nowtakethestringovertothenotchthatisnexttothepicturethatyouthinkgoeswiththeword“linear.”Thenmakethestringgoaroundthebackagainandthenintothenotchthatsays“pinnate.”Continuelikethisuntilyouhavethestringwrappedaroundthecardninetimes.Thelastwrapshouldleavethestringonthebacksideofthecard,butendingrightbehindthewordEND.Pinchthatcornersothestringstaysinplace,thenturnthecardover.Ifyouguessedcorrectly,allofyourstringswillmatchupwiththelinesonthebackofthecard.Ifyouseesomelinesthatdon’tmatchyourstrings,unwindthestringandtryagain. (Ifyoufindthatyourstringistoolong,trimittotherightlength.)
