General Characteristics of Muscle Tissue

Function

• movement

Location

• attached to bones, in the walls of hollow organs, heart

3 main types

• Skeletal

• Smooth

• Cardiac

Distinguishing characteristics

• Contractile

• Fibers pull at the attached end to move body parts

Skeletal Muscle - Characteristics• Most abundant type found in

the body• Striated• Voluntary• Long, nonbranching cylindrical

cells• Multiple nuclei along

perimetersLocation

• Found around cartilage and bone

• Attach muscles to the skeleton

Cardiac Muscle - Key Characteristics• Weak striations• Involuntary• Cylindrical, branching

cells• Have intercalated disks

at end of cells• Centrally located nuclei• Once differentiated -

does not go through mitosis (aka - reproduce)

Location• Heart

Smooth Muscle -Key Characteristics• Involuntary

• Lack striations

• Single, centrally located nuclei

• Cells shorter than skeletal tissue and spindle shaped

• Used in the contraction of the bladder

• Peristalsis of the digestive system

• Constricts or dilates blood vessels

Location

• Found in walls of visceral organs (stomach, esophagus, uterus)

General Characteristics of Nervous TissueFunction

• transmit impulses for coordination, regulation, integration, & sensory reception

Location

• brain, spinal cord, nerves

Characteristics

• cells connect to each other & other body parts

• Cells contain a single nuclei

• Cells are called neurons

• Highly branched

• May have a covering called myelin

• Can’t reproduce once differentiated

Neurons in CNS

• Sense changes in the surroundings

• Transmit impulses along nerve fibers

• Coordinate, regulate, & integrate body functions

• Locations in the body

– Brain

– Spinal Cord

Neuroglial Cells

• Support and bind components of nervous tissue

• Phagocytosis

• Supply nutrients to neurons

• Able to reproduce
