Timetable
3.15-3.30 – break: bring food, use the kettle, anything to stay awake and happy!
3.30-4.00 – listening and theory 4.00-4.30 – composition 4.30-5.00 - performance
Listening and theory
Teaching the necessary skills to analyse music and answer exam questions
Improving your knowledge of music theory
There will be one exam in June of Y11. It will last for 1 hour and is worth 20% of the total mark
Composing
Composing 2 pieces (total time of about 4 minutes
Each piece should be influenced by music from a “strand”. These are: western classical music, popular music and world music
Each piece should have elements from the 5 areas of study. These are: rhythm and metre, harmony and tonality, texture and melody, timbre and dynamics, structure and form
Composing
For one of your compositions you will have to write about what you have done.
You will know the questions in advance
You will be able to prepare the answers in advance, with help
You will be able to take your answers into the exam

Performing
Record one solo and one ensemble performance
A solo can be accompanied with a pianist or backing track
As part of a band a solo part should have a significant solo role
Ensembles should have 3 or more performers, with no parts “doubling”. But pianists and guitarists…
Coursework?
I’ve already told you! 2 compositions, written and recorded 2 performances 40% for each unit
Homework?
Practise performance pieces Work on compositions Listen to music from the 3 strands Prepare for tests
Extra stuff
It will greatly help your development and give you opportunities to practise and record your performances if you take part in the following events:
Production, Christmas concert, Talent Show
The Y10 and Y11 concerts are compulsory
