Students will ask a question, write a hypothesis, gather material, conduct an experiment, and document the results using the scientific method.

Students will practice using the scientific method by conduction a scientific investigation.

Discovery begins with a question.

Question◦ What is my reaction time?

After self-asking a question, write a hypothesis.

Hypothesis◦ My hypothesis is that if my partner lets go of the

meter-stick then my reaction reaction time will be inches.

Preparing for experiment Materials

◦ A partner◦ Journal◦ Pencil◦ Meter stick

1. Procedures1. First, partner A will hold meter stick at one end

and partner B will hold index finger and thumb apart at opposite end.

2. Second, have partner A let go of and snap you fingers shut.

3. Third, record where your fingers shut.4. Last, steps 1-3 10 times. Record each time.

In Part 1, we reviewed the preparation of a science experiment by using the scientific method. With Part 2 you will learn to take

Part 1 of the scientific method and conduct the experiment.

Conduct Experiment:Once the students have prepared for their experiment they can continue to the next step in the method which is to Conduct the Experiment. Here students will take their preparations and conduct the scientific investigation.

To begin conducting the experiment students will need an Observation Log. The

Observation Log, is where students will collect their data and record the experiment

results.

Example: Observation Log

Once the students have gathered the data. The data and results are analyzed and students then draw conclusions based on their results.

Conclusion:When the students write their conclusion they restate their hypothesis and decide whether their hypothesis was or was not supported.

Example:

Conclusion:My results were #, #, and #. My hypothesis

was #, therefore my hypothesis (was or was not) supported.

Once the students have completed their science experiment, they have the opportunity to reflect. The students will reflect on their experiment and the things that could have been changed. Students can then reevaluate and create a new question that can then be tested.
