ELEMENTS OF GROUP 17

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF GROUP 17ELEMENTS OF GROUP 17

The physical state of halogens changes gradually from gas (chlorine) to liquid (bromine) and finally to solid (iodine)The colour also gradually changes from light to dark.gas liquid solid

FluorinePale yellow/brown gas(kuning muda)

ChlorinePale green gas(kuning kehijauan)

BromineRed brown liquid(perang kemerahan)

IodineViolet solid(ungu kehitaman)Electron Arrangement of Halogens

PROPERTIES OF CHLORINE, BROMINE & IODINE

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF HALOGENS

Poor heat conductor because they are made up of covalent bondsMolecules are low in density and are attracted to each other by weak forcesNon-metal elementsPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF HALOGENS(MOVING DOWN THE GROUP)The number of proton and electron increase as we move down the group.protonElectronElectron ArrangementChlorine17172.8.7Bromine35352.8.18.7iodine53532.8.18.18.7ATOMIC SIZEAtomic size increases as we move down the group, causing the density to increase when going down the group.

MELTING AND BOILING POINT

MELTING AND BOILING POINTMelting and boiling point increase down the group.Due to the increase in atomic size. Thus, forces of attraction between molecule increases.Cause more heat energy needed to overcome the force of attraction.

All halogens have 7 valence electrons. Therefore, show same chemical properties.Chemical Properties of Group 17

Reaction of Group 17

Reactivity of Group 17Down the group, the atomic size increases. The outer shells filled with electrons become further from the nucleus. Therefore, the force of attraction between the nucleus and valence electrons become weaker. Thus, the ability to attract an electron to achieve a stable octet electron arrangement decreases. So, reactivity decreases down the group.
