Code2007 Edition

Recognizes FRP Poles as having the same Reliability as Steel!

THE REAL TEST vs. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS

• “Field performance of millions of FRP light poles and tens of thousands of FRP crossarms has shown very good long-term structural property retention” Source: EDM International

• “There have been no known failures of FRP poles and crossarms due to long-term durability issues that have not been resolved in today's design and manufacture techniques” Source: EDM International

Long-Term Performance of FRP Utility Structures

• “FRP utility poles and crossarms are at the stage and volume of use with demonstrated good long term field performance that they should be included in NESC 2007.” Source: EDM International

• “FRP utility poles and crossarms should be entered into NESC 2007 with strength factors the same as steel and (prestressed) concrete” Source: EDM International

THE NESC VOTING RESULT:

• FRP utility poles and crossarms successfully voted into NESC 2007 with strength factors the same as steel and (prestressed) concrete (September 2005 vote)

Why Were FRP Poles and Crossarms Included in the NESC?

FRP Pole Reliability

In many cases an FRP pole can replace a wood pole that is one class higher and still

have a higher reliability

Why Should Utilities Care?

• Increase Grid Reliability

• Increase Safety

• Save You Money!

Environmental Safe• No leeching of chemical preservatives

• Ideal for school yards, play grounds and public areas

• FRP ideal for crew handling & labor relations

FRP Composite Advantage

Environmental SOLUTIONS• Utilities experiencing increased disposal controls

• FRP material is recyclable or common waste stream

• Provides GREEN Solution in the PUBLIC DOMAIN

FRP Composite Advantage

Non - Conductive

• All raw materials are non-conductive

• Pass ‘hot stick’ recertification tests • ASTM F7111 & IEEE 978

• Fire: materials self extinguishing• UL94: 94V-0 rating

FRP Composite Advantage

Rot Proof

• No warp, rot or decay with age

• Low preventative maintenance

• Ideal for coastal & caustic applications

• Unaffected by moisture exposure

FRP Composite Advantage

Why Does MET ED Care?

• Concerned about leaching chemical preservatives in the environment • Wood poles rot

Why Does Hawaii Electric Care?

Powertrusion Pole

• Termites destroy wood poles in 10 years• Winds produce major damage to the termite weakened grid

Why Does First Energy Care?

• Light weight poles are ideal for limited access sets

• Can be set with a minimal environmental footprint

Why Does Somerset RUS Care?

• Wood Pecker damage is eliminated• Copper theft is mitigated as the ground is in the pole

Why Does This West Coast Utility Care?

• A light weight helicopter saves $• They want to replace the wood

poles and forget• They want poles with fire

protection• Woodpeckers destroy wood poles

Pole Installation

• Drill with carbide tipped drill bits• Do not use cleated hardware, lag bolts

or staples

• Reference the Pole Brochure.• Set the pole in the same manner as wood• Use Nylon choker sling for picking and setting

pole (double-wrap is best, or just below a bolt)

• Use self tapping stainless screws for grounding and fastening

• Always back any bolted connection with a 4” square washer

• Never over torque bolted connections. Finger tight plus a ½ turn

Field Drilling

…or Carbide-tipped twist drills

Drill should have steep pitch carbide tip

Proposed Solutions

Aliphatic Coating Options

“aliphatic isocyanates are used in the manufacturing of light-stable coatings. They are used when UV or light stability is a must as it is the case in automotive clear coats and in many water-based recipes.”
