WITH his keen interest invintage collectables and alove for travelling to exoticdestinations, Sydney Katenamassed a treasure trove ofbelongings in his 83 years.

On Sunday, the late Fair-field East resident’s prizedpossessions will go underthe hammer at an auction athis Landon St home.

The Sydney CharlesKaten Collection comprisesAmerican muscle cars, an-tique designer jewellery,Chinese Qing Dynasty-eraporcelain, retro furniture,games, artwork, cameras,die-cast models, shippingmaterial and the largest col-lection of 00-gauge boxedlocomotives ever seen onthe Australian market.

Ravenswick auctioneerAlex Renwick said the awe-inspiring catalogue em-braced unique items from arange of times and places.

‘‘The collection is reallyremarkable and the sheervolume of the material isquite something,’’ he said.

‘‘I’ve been doing this job

for a very, very long timeand I’ve never seen such adepth of collectables likethis in Fairfield.’’

Mr Katen, who died inMay aged 83, had lived inFairfield for 50 years. Hewas a skilled mechanic andran a bus and coach busi-ness. The auction also in-cludes items from anothercollector such as golf clubsowned by Arthur Beetsonand Cathy Freeman’s run-ning shoes.

FAIRFIELD state Labor MPGuy Zangari has been ap-pointed the new shadowminister for citizenship andcommunities following lastweek’s reshuffle.

Mr Zangari, the son ofItalian migrants, said theappointment by oppositionleader John Robertson‘‘made sense’’, given Fair-field was one of the state’smost ethnically diverseelectorates.

‘‘First and foremost I willalways have Fairfield as mypriority because those arethe people who elected metheir member of parlia-ment,’’ he said.

‘‘My job will be very sim-ple: to ensure that Labordevelops policies that helpmigrant communities meettheir aspirations in life.

‘‘As the new shadow min-ister, my door is open toevery migrant communityin NSW.’’

Mr Zangari said the NSWgovernment’s cuts to healthand education spending‘‘had gone down particu-larly bad in migrant com-munities’’.

‘‘So many people came toNSW in the first place be-cause of our world-class hos-pitals and schools,’’ he said.

Mr Zangari was amongfour MPs elevated to thefront bench after the resig-nation of roads spokesmanRobert Furolo.

‘‘The eldest son of mi-grant parents, Guy is aproduct of multiculturalAustralia and I know he’llbe a hard-working andproud shadow minister forcitizenship and communi-ties,’’ Mr Robertson said.
