On the 8th November, 40 students from Canobolas High walked down to the Orange Function Centre to compete in
the annual NAIROC Eisteddfod, an event supporting NAIDOC week.
The students participated in a seven minute performance choreographed by a variety of teachers and students to
celebrate the Aboriginal culture in our community. The performance started with a traditional indigenous dance
performed by a group of our Girri Girri girls. A traditional boys dance followed involving the use of spears, clap sticks
and the traditional lap lap. Our Year 9/10 dance students then performed after the boys in a protest type performance
using large signs, replicating the 1967 protest regarding Aboriginals rights. Following this was a lyrical dance about
young children and the effects this had on them. The finale saw all students come together dancing to a Jessica
Mauboy song to show the integration and uniting of cultures. This celebration dance was a huge hit and received 2nd
place overall in the senior category.
All of our students performed and behaved in an outstanding manner and represented the school in a positive way. All
students enjoyed a complimentary lunch provided and cooked by the students of Bowen Public school.
This was a great opportunity for all students and school in the community to get involved and celebrate the indigenous
culture in our area. Thankyou to everyone involved, especially the organisers of this event, we can’t WAIT for next
year!!
NAIROC 2016
From the
Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of the School Community
In my last newsletter contribution I spoke about how busy the term had become and nothing has
changed. As you would all recognise the year is rapidly drawing to a close, but there are still many things
to be achieved.
Junior Exams
Year 7-10 students have been involved in examinations and end of course assessment tasks in the past
week. It has been encouraging to see the large number of students who have been striving to achieve
their absolute best. Reports will now be completed by the teaching staff and should be mailed home to
families in the last week of term.
Year 12 Graduation
The Year 12 Graduation was held on Friday 18th November at the Orange Function Centre. As always it
was a fantastic night, celebrating with Year 12 and recognising their many achievements. Thanks must
go to Andrew Farley, our Canteen Manager and his team for the wonderful catering and to Mr Curran,
Ms Shepherd and all of their assistants for their organisation of the night. These events do not happen
without a great deal of work and effort behind the scenes and this is truly appreciated.
Year 7 2017 Parent Meeting
A very well attended Year 7 2017 parent meeting was held on Thursday 17th November in the STEM
Centre. Parents were able to find out more about the school and the introduction of Project Based
Learning for Year 7 next year. They could also see examples of the school uniform and purchase book
packs, containing all the equipment required to start at high school. The book packs are still available for
Year 7 2017 from the Front Office for $35.
Big Picture Exhibitions
Last week all students who have been part of the Big Picture Academy in 2016 gave their end of year
exhibitions. The students invite a panel to view their work and they present information and reflections on
what they have achieved this year. I have had the privilege of being invited to a number of these
exhibitions and the quality of work being completed by the students is of a very high standard. This
program will continue into 2017 and any student Year 8-10 who thinks Big Picture might be for them
should consider applying. Applications can be found on the school website and close on 25 th November
2016.
Schools Spectacular
Week 7 sees a group of students and teachers head to Sydney to once again take part in Schools
Spectacular. We have both singers going to be part of the choir and Keia Wise participating as a
member of an Aboriginal dance group. We wish all the students and staff well and keep an eye out for
the broadcast of this event sometime in the future.
I hope you have a wonderful fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in Week 8.
With my warmest regards
Kate Wootten Relieving Principal

SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS Year 9 are dissecting brains to investigate the internal structure and how it relates to the nervous
system.
While the CKC Cup was on the rest of us were able to take time to explore and develop some of
our necessary Science skills. A variety of games and playing cards enabled some to work on
their classification skills while modelling clay allowed others to create 3D models of animals.
Some of us got busy exploring electrical circuits and the impact of volts while others used a
lifelike 3D jigsaw puzzle to delve into the inner workings of the human body.
Those not faint of heart examined mini beasts under the microscope (do you know how gross a
bed bug really is?!)
On her recent trip to the USA Mrs Richard
came across STEM at The Museum of Flight in
Seattle. $30m has been invested by Boeing in
their Academy for STEM Learning. An aviation
high school is located right next door to the
museum.
The Battleship Iowa Museum in Long Beach is
host to thousands of school children that
participate in STEM programs in a real world
maritime environment.
The STEM Innovation Awards are sponsored by
leading Silicon Valley companies and honour
top STEM education programs that inspire
students and teachers and help students
prepare for college-level learning and
technology careers.
A career in STEM can take you anywhere in
the world.

Singing Spec-ers!
Next week, we head to Sydney for a week of rehearsals and shows for the 2016 NSW Schools
Spectacular. This is the first year the show is held at QUDOS Bank Arena, Sydney Olympic Park.
We are very excited to be a part of this public education showcase again (having been
involved 2015 and 2013).
The 8 students from Years 7-12 have attended Spec rehearsals this term in addition to regular
choir rehearsals, to learn the repertoire for the 3 hour Schools Spectacular show. From the
exciting opening Italian piece, to Bohemian Rhapsody – the show has a lot of songs from a
broad range of genres. Our students will be split according to voice type, where they will sit with
their choir section and sing the music written for their voice part. We have 4 Sopranos, 3 Altos
and 1 Baritone.
We are very grateful for Miss Neve’s involvement – she will be singing Alto and accompanying
our choir for the rehearsals and shows. The days are long: 8am – 4pm Wednesday for choir
rehearsal; 7am – 7pm Thursday for final dress rehearsals. Then two shows Friday (morning and
evening)) and two shows Saturday (afternoon and evening). This means early starts and late
finishes these days. Mr Pelley will be driving the bus and organizing meals and snacks for us to
help out with the busy schedule.
Miss Aldrick has been given a role backstage – as a member of the “Call to Stage Team.” She
will be working behind the scenes with other teachers from around the state, to ensure the
show runs smoothly – and she is very excited for this exciting new experience at this amazing
venue.
“Dream Big” is the theme and how all of us are feeling about this experience.
Tickets are available through Ticketek.

rehearsing and performing in Sydney at
the Opera House. She experienced
working with highly talented choralists
from around the state, and well-
regarded conductors and music
educators, while performing in one of
the country’s best performance spaces.
Congratulations Ellena.
An HSIE Production…
Coming soon to Tuesday lunchtime History Club is designed for those who have an interest in history and would like to learn
more. Topics covered will not be part of the current mandatory school program and will
try to encourage students to choose a senior history subject when they reach Years 11
and 12.
We will look at topics that span the length of time and incorporate skills that you already
learn in your HSIE/History lessons. The extra use of these skills in different topics will
allow you to develop a deeper depth of knowledge and understanding of historiography
and enhance your learning experience in the classroom.
History Club will explore four different topics over the four terms of school as follows:
Term 1: Assassinations
Term 2: Conspiracies
Term 3: Mysteries
Term 4: Mythologies

Luminosity
Our students have been helping with the
Luminosity festival setup by helping prepare the
major sign for the event. A great contribution
from our school to a local event.
Thanks to Liam, Kirra, Jesse, Jack and Mr Gleeson.
DreamCricket is coordinated by Rotary Clubs and the Bradman Foundation. The aim is to provide primary
school students with special needs an opportunity to play cricket and cricket related activities.
Clinics are conducted for schools as part of a cricket experience which culminates in a DreamCricket Day on
a significant local oval (Wade Park). DreamCricket is a voluntary run Rotary Project. Clinics and gala days
require a great deal of commitment from the communities in which they are held.
Canobolas High School students gave their time to assist the participants with special needs. They were
trained to facilitate and modify cricket activities to suit each participant. Therefore each participant reaches
success in achieving their personal best. They gain confidence through active participation in physical
activities. It isn’t just the participants that gain from DreamCricket.
The volunteers were proud to explain about how ‘their kids’ were able to hit the target or swing the bat. The
students gained confidence in working with a variety of children with special needs, changing an activity for
an individual to reach success and being assured that the participants are able and willing to ‘give-it-a-go’!
Their carers and teachers also gain confidence in knowing that the children can participate in a sport outside
of the classroom and that the wider community in which they live has gained a better understanding of what
it means to have ‘special needs’.
Congratulations to all our Canobolas volunteers who chose to give up their time to support younger students
with special needs. You have again made your school and I am sure your families very proud.

Girri Girri Naidoc Week BBQ
Week 5 was definitely the busiest of weeks for the Girri Girri academy with NAIDOC WEEK
celebtrations. The girls participated in numerous events throughout the week including the
NAIDOC march, hosting our own BBQ, NAIROC performance and OAMS Open day.
The NAIROC performance turned out to be an extremely successful day with the Canobolas
group taking out 2nd place! A big thankyou to everyone that contributed to the dances and
performances. We are already planning to go one better next year.
The girls hosted a BBQ last Wednesday to raise funds for their end of year trip. The girls cooked
up some delicious sausages including a new flavour hit, Kangaroo and Plum. Jonny cakes were
also on the menu. A big thankyou to Vanessa Monaghan who gave up her time to come in and
make these cakes.
Next week we are off to Condobolin for a cultural camp which is hosted by VERTO. Nine girls
from Girri Girri and the Clontarf academy will venture out west to participate in cultural events
such as basket weaving and didgeridoo making. Students will also participate in a games day
where Canobolas students will play against Condobolin High School in Netball and OzTag.
