Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): For year 12 into 13

1. I have a question to ask. When will staff be available?

Firstly, look through our FAQs, we may have the answer to your question. If not, staff will

be in school on Results Day (August 17th) between 9:00am and 2:00pm and again on Year 13

Enrolment Day (September 5th). There are specific times to come in on this day, see below.

Staff will be in school on September 4th, but will be very busy dealing with the new year 12

students, please do not come in on this day

2. When is Results Day?

Year 12 (going into 13) students can collect their results on Thursday 17th August, between

11:00 and 12:00. You will appreciate that we need to give the year 13 students their results

first, earlier that morning. Please bring your enrolment form with you.

3. I can’t come to Results Day, what should I do?

If results are not collected then we will post them home later that day, via second class post.

If you would like someone to collect your results, then we need written permission from

you. This permission should state your name, tutor group, the name of who you have

nominated to collect your results; please sign this statement too.

It is helpful to attend Results Day as you can potentially re-enrol on to your courses (please

bring your enrolment form) that day and avoid the need to come to Enrolment Day.

We are not in a position to be able to email or telephone results.

4. I don’t think one of my exam results is correct, what should I do?

If this is the case, please have a look at the Post Results Service .This explains how you can

request a re-mark or get your paper back. You do not need to use the priority service. This

is for year 13 students whose university place is dependent on a re-mark. For more

information, please look at the exams section of the website.

5. When is Enrolment Day and how is it organised?

Enrolment Day is on September 5th. Students must attend this day if there are changes to be

made to their programme of study and/or they have not come into school on results day.

Please only come in at the time allocated for your tutor group. If you arrive early you will

have to wait for your allocated time. Please bring your enrolment form with you and if you

wish to start a new course then complete a Post Sixth Form Intentions Form.

10.15 AG, AO, BT, CB, DK, ES, GA

11.30 GB, HG, JM, JR, JS, JT, MQ (students in GB and MQ will join their new tutor

groups after enrolment)

12:30 MR, MT, PB, SH, SL, WL

There will be an “express checkout” for straightforward enrolment (i.e. no changes or just

dropping the fourth course) however a member of staff will verify that sensible decisions are

being made before agreeing to the change.

If you have more complicated changes to discuss you will be seen on a first come first

served basis by Mr Nicholls, Mr Flello, Mrs Needham or a senior member of staff. Please be

patient, we need to give everyone time to discuss concerns.

Please remember to bring your enrolment form with you.

6. What is the “Express Checkout”?

This process is for students who:

already have three courses, which have been passed, on their programme of study;

are discontinuing with one subject and the choice is straight forward.

However, there will be a member of staff at the “express checkout” who will check you are

making the right decision. You must have passed your year 12 exams to be able to continue

with a course. If this is not the case, then please come to the enrolment day to discuss your

programme of study.

7. I can’t come to results day or enrolment day but don’t have any changes to

make. Can someone enrol for me?

Students should make themselves available for Enrolment Day; the school term has officially

started by this point in time. If there are extenuating circumstances that prevent you from

attending on this day then please email Mr Nicholls rnicholls@thomas-hardye.net

8. I can’t make results day or enrolment day but I have changes that I need to

make.

If you have changes that you wish to discuss then it is really important that you attend

Enrolment Day. This is the day when we have staff available to give you the time that is

needed to make these important decisions. We also need time to generate every student’s

timetable ready for the first day of lessons. It would be best if you can change your plans and

come to school. However, if this really is not possible then please email Mr Nicholls

rnicholls@thomas-hardye.net He will start checking emails in the last week of the holidays.

You should have completed some research about your future plans and filled in a Post Sixth

Form Intentions form.

9. I am unhappy with my current programme of study. What should I do?

Please do some research and complete a Post Intentions Form and bring this to Enrolment

Day. You must attend this day so that staff can discuss the variety of options that could be

available to you. These options could include remaining on your current programme of study

and picking up a one-year course, with a view to finishing sixth form at the end of year 13.

If you are not sure what you want to do, then we will help advise you. You can also speak to

our Ansbury Advisor, Mrs Hymas. She will be in school on Enrolment Day. You can also

look at the Ansbury website www.ansbury.co.uk

10. I have not passed one of my courses. What can I do?

It is unfortunate that you have not achieved a pass mark (A – E).

If you think that there is a problem with the marking of your exam you can request a re-

mark. Please use the form found on the website and then contact the exams office

cboyles@thomas-hardye.net . You may want to speak to your teacher. You can email them

directly but we cannot promise that they will respond until September.

In all cases, you will need to discuss your programme of study on Enrolment Day as it is

highly probable that you cannot continue with your course into the second year. We will

discuss potential options with you. These include picking up a one-year course, with a view

to finishing sixth form at the end of year 13. Please do some research about future plans

before coming into school and complete in a Post Sixth Form Intentions form.

11. What are the one year courses I could pick up?

There are some one year courses for students in year 13. A final list of options will be

available in September, however, there are some options that are likely to be running:

EPQ. There will be a second opportunity for students to start the EPQ in September. This

will include regular timetabled lessons throughout the year. Completing two A Levels and

the EPQ would be an excellent option for some students. The EPQ will fit into all option

pools.

Core Maths AS Level. Core Maths is the new Level 3 qualification for students who achieved

a minimum of a grade C at GCSE Maths and wish to develop their practical maths skills for

the real world, be it in work, study or everyday life. Details of the option pool will be

available on Enrolment Day.

Applied Science BTEC. By joining a year 12 group, students can gain an equivalent to an AS

level called a BTEC Certificate. You will need to have option pools 13A or 13C free to do

this course.

Psychology AS Level. There will be a specific class for year 13 students to pick up this

course. This option is in pool 13B.

12. How many course do I have to study?

Students in year 12 and 13 needed to be a full-time programme of study. This is the

equivalent to three courses.

13. Do I have to achieve three A Levels to get to university?

Not necessarily. There are many foundation degrees that are designed to have lower entry

requirements and to bridge the gap between sixth form and Higher Education. Once you

have successfully completed a foundation degree you can then move on to a Batchelor’s

Degree. Some students will leave Sixth Form, for example, with two A Levels and an

additional one year course qualification.

14. Can I continue on my four A Level programme?

In some cases, yes. If you study Further Mathematics, then we strongly advise that you keep

all four courses going. Also, students who have achieved very high results (AAAB/AAAA)

are invited to continue with four if they would like. A member of the team will discuss this

with you if you are interested in doing this.

15. I have passed four AS Levels and I can’t decide which course to discard. What

should I do?

Now that you have your results, you are in a better position to make an informed decision.

You have also started the second year of the courses, so you should have a clear idea of

what you will be studying. Staff can discuss things with you and help advise, but it is your

decision.

16. I’m doing Further Mathematics, can I discard one of my other courses?

We strongly recommend that you keep all four courses going, especially if you have high

grades. If not, you may consider discarding Further Mathematics but keeping Mathematics on

your timetable. Some universities view Further Mathematics differently to others and just

see it as “more” maths. They want to see breadth of choice from their applicants. Also, in

future years you may find it helpful to have kept that range of different subjects on your CV.

17. I am currently studying Mathematics and I would like to pick up AS Further

Mathematics as an extra course. What should I do?

You do not need to come to Enrolment Day to pick up this specific course. The maths

department will organise this within your lessons in the first week of term.

18. When does term start?

Lesson start for year 13 students on Thursday 7th September.

19. I really don’t know what to do after the sixth form. Do I have to submit a draft

futures document when term starts?

It can be really difficult when you are not sure what you want to do after sixth form; and this

can be quite common for a number of students. We have asked all students to complete

either a personal statement for a university application or a CV. All students will need a CV

at some point, so make a start on this. Also, think about listing your achievements and

experiences you have had over the last few years, and what you have got out of them. This

will help you to analyse your strengths and what you enjoy doing.

20. I have tried ringing the school but not got through to anyone.

The office staff and teachers are still on their summer break. The ideal time to contact us is

on Results day or Enrolment day. You can email Mr Nicholls rnicholls@thomas-hardye.net

but it is unlikely that you will get a response until the last week of the holidays.
