Free Printables from Laura Candler
Grades 3 - 5
Penmanship is seldom taught in school anymore, but that doesn’t mean it’s not
important. Whether students write in print or cursive, they need to develop
neat, legible writing in order to communicate effectively in writing. If we can’t
read their writing, how can we access the content of their work?
This packet consists of several variations of a basic handwriting practice
paragraph. I composed the paragraph with two purposes in mind:
• to give information about the qualities of good handwriting
• to include all the letters of the alphabet for sufficient practice
Please note that this set of printables was not designed for
handwriting instruction; instead, this simple paragraph isfor handwriting practice. The first time you introduce it
to students, share your expectations with them and
provide an appropriate model. Are they expected to
write in cursive? Is it okay to write in print as long as they
write neatly? When I used this with my students, my main
focus was to encourage neat, legible handwriting and I
allowed them to write in either print or cursive.
Teaching Suggestions:• Assign students to copy the paragraph once a week for a “bell work” assignment in the
morning, during a literacy center, or for homework. You may want to require students tomeet a designated standard using a pass/fail system. If the quality of a students’ work is not
up to par, allow them to redo the assignment and resubmit it.
• Duplicate copies of the appropriate lined paper for each student or ask them to copy the
paragraph onto their own paper. You can choose from portrait or landscape orientation
and several line widths.
• Model proper handwriting techniques the first time you use the assignment. If you don’t
think that the samples included are close enough to the handwriting techniques you teach,
create your own sample using one of the plain handwriting lined pages.
• You can give students the half-sheet copy of the paragraph or one of the full-page print or
cursive handwriting samples. If you plan to repeat the activity each week, laminate your
copies of the assignment and reuse them to save paper.
• If you have good parent support, send home the variation on page 3 and ask parents toreview and sign their child’s work.

Writing is a form of expression, and neat handwriting is
important because we are often judged by the quality of our work.Good handwriting involves forming letters properly and spacing the
letters carefully within words. Letters should not be squeezed too
closely together or spaced too far apart. Capital letters should be
taller than lower-case letters. Words need to be separated so they
don’t run together. Developing good handwriting is a skill that
improves with practice.
Handwriting Practice Paragraph
Write the above paragraph neatly on a sheet of paper. Be
sure to write your name and the date at the top of your paper.
