The Culture Walk (6.1 km / 3.8 miles)Longyearbyen was established due to the rich coaldeposits discovered at the end of the 19th century. When you walk the streets of Longyearbyen youwill pass by buildings and installations from whenthe town was dominated by the coal industry. Polarexplorers used Longyearbyen and Svalbard as a base and departing point for their expeditions toconquer the North Pole. Visit the museums to learn more about the town´s facinating history.

Dining, wining and shopping in LongyearbyenIn our small town of 2100 people we have an abundance of options for both dining & wining, as well as shopping. The cafés, restaurants and bars are varied, but all offering great food and drinks in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The locals love going out eating and drinking, so why don’t you join them? In between doing activities or visiting attractions you may plan for shopping in one of the town’s many shops. Souvenirs, outdoor equipment, cigarettes, alcohol, gold and much more are to be found – at very reasonable prices as Svalbard is all taxfree (no VAT)!

AttractionsSvalbard MuseumLIFE IN ICE AND LIGHT – We are showing you Svalbard’s 400years of natural and cultural history in an award winning exhibition. The museum shop offers Arctic souvenirs, fossils and jewelry desig-ned by local artists, postcards, stamps, maps and Arctic literature.

Galleri SvalbardThis gallery presents artworks by artists inspired by the nature, light, colours and contrasts in Svalbard. It also includes the perma-nent collection of paintings by Kåre Tveter, the “painter of light”.

North Pole Expedition MuseumThe museum presents the history of three airships trying to reach the North Pole, all starting from Svalbard: “America”, “Norge” and “Italia”. Exhibition of pictures, documents, films, models of landscape, ships, airplanes and airships. The shop offers books and souvenirs.

WildPhoto GalleryOur gallery is the northernmost photo gallery in the world. Award winning photographers Ole Jørgen Liodden and Roy Mangersnes are presenting 30 of their best images from Svalbard. They are produced as FineArt prints, then signed and numbered 1-30 in a Limited Edition collection.

Gruve 3 – Mine no. 3Coal mine number 3 was the last low drifted mine with production from 1971 – 1996. See the workshops, coaltip stations, blacksmiths place and the lunch room, and get the chance to test a true miners life with crawling through a stoll (small tunnel). In the end of the tour we enter the mountain and walk down the dark tunnel.

Svalbard ChurchSvalbard Church is part of the Church of Norway and organised by the Bishop in Nord-Hålogaland. The Church is a meeting place and a venue for both religious services and cultural gatherings. With the majestic Arctic landscape as altar cloth, we meet with all kinds of people in all of life’s situations. The church is open 24/7.

SUSTAINABLEDESTINATIONLOCAL ENGAGEMENTIN A LONG PERSPECTIVE

Svalbard Guidelines1. Don´t be an Arctic litterbug! Leave

no lasting signs of your visit.

2. Birds and other animals are not to be disturbed. Remember, you are the guest.

3. Help take care of the biodiversity. Do not pick flowers.

4. Leave old cultural remains alone. Law protects all traces of humans from before 1946.

5. It is prohibited to lure, pursue or otherwise seek out polar bears in such a way as to disturb them or expose either bears or humans to danger.

6. Don´t leave settlements without a suitable gun, and experience in using it.

7. Be considerate to others.

8. Contact the Governor´s office if planning a longer field excur-sion. A mandatory registration applies for travel to large parts of Svalbard.

9. Acquaint yourself with the rules and regulations pertaining to travel and other tourist activities in Svalbard.

10. For the sake of both the environment and yourself, we recommend organised tour arrangements.

It is impossible being an invisible tourist, but we appreciate you trying.
