Sustainability in Healthcare

Design :

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION

By Amy Blaine

• Follow a function: the shape of a building or object should primarily relate to its intended function or purpose.

• Consider adopting the Bauhaus design principle of “form follows function” in our healthcare environment.

FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION – but is this sustainable?

• Sustainability: - the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level • Sustainability of economic growth - avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. • The pursuit of global environmental sustainability

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN FACTORS

Sustainable design seeks to reduce negative impacts on the environment, and the health and comfort of building occupants, thereby improving building performance. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimize waste, and create healthy, productive environments

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN FACTORS

How much bigger will our buildings get? And then how sustainable is it….in all elements….makes you think?

REGULATIONS – DO THEY RESTRICT US or NOT?

SANS 10400 – National Building Regulations R158 – Department Of Health Regulation of South Africa – Gazetted in 1980 PN 187 – Department of Health Regulation of the Western Cape -Gazetted in 2001 IUSS – implemented only on Public Facilities – Gazetted May 2015

CONCLUSION

‘Form’ could still follow ‘function’, providing we redefine the function of a hospital as an institution built to create a more holistic ‘wellness’, to consider the dignity, emotional needs and mental state of our ‘patient / guest’ to be every bit as important as his / her physical health.

IT IS ALL POSSIBLE – WE MUST JUST BE AWARE OF BEING SUSTAINALBE !
