INTRODUCING SUNNYDALE
Sunnydale was established in 1985 by its founding members
spearheaded by its late Chairman Abdul Mannan Khan. Based
on the syllabus published by the UK Education Board this
institution is aimed at providing quality education to the
society.
Students admitted in this school are mostly from educated
family backgrounds with prime aim to get higher education
from prestigious institutions at home and abroad. Some of our
students with outstanding results obtained from the Ordinary
Level and Advanced Level Examinations apply to renowned
colleges and universities of the world. Among them, some of
the students get full scholarship to study in these universities.
Since its inception, we have striven to maintain a slow and
measured but steady pace of growth in class levels. This policy
has, so far, paid rich dividends in terms of institutional
development. We are now confident that this conservative
rate of progress has enabled us to assess, reflect upon and
design our future course, thus avoiding the risks of unplanned
hasty growth. It has also resulted in a comprehensive,
systematic and structured evolution of such school facilities
as administrative buildings, science, computer laboratories etc.
The adoption of a gradual but specifically defined expansion
policy has helped Sunnydale to build a healthy relationship
among its workforce, its student body and the society at large.
At present, Sunnydale is housed in different locations with
classes ranging from Playgroup to Grade Twelve. Our future
plans include the construction of school facilities on its own
land at Bashundhara.
We, at Sunnydale, believe the measure of our institutional
growth is demonstrated by the success of our students in
Ordinary and Advanced Level Examinations every year.
2
Today, Sunnydale looks forward to a future of constant and
uninterrupted growth and hopes to set an example of an
institution that has endured the test of its existence through
the years.
Ideology Sunnydale considers each of its students a special being with
the potential of growing, maturing and standing on their own.
We are here merely as guides to steer the students along the
course of life towards their cherished destination. Our
students have been lucky enough to have gained entry here;
thus, they are obligated to help those who are less fortunate.
We believe in the motto ‘Each one for everyone’. We hope to
inculcate the basic goodness of a human being in our students
so that they grow up to help the world even in the smallest
measure. And even if they fail to do that, then they should not
pose a threat to the society around them.
To achieve the aforesaid goals Sunnydale believes each of its
students should:
develop Bangladeshi Nationalism and Patriotism, with a sense
of dignity and pride.
develop love and respect for Bangladeshi Culture, Heritage
and Bengali Language.
develop oneself as a responsible individual.
develop interpersonal skills and grasp a strong command
over English language.
respect and cooperate with the teachers, fellow students
and members of the staff.
develop self-confidence, self-reliance and self-esteem.
develop creativity and originality.
cope with individual and social challenges.
3
actively participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular
activities.
relate to the greater world as productive citizens of the
world.
set examples of strong moral and civic behaviour by
displaying honesty, integrity, humanity, tolerance, sincerity
and dedication.
Transition from Edexcel to Cambridge International
Examinations (CIE)
Sunnydale started its Ordinary Level programme with the
courses offered by the University of London which led to
General Certificate of Education Examinations. Students sat
for these examinations after completing Class Ten.
Between 1996 and 1998 the ‘University of London Schools
Examination Board’ merged with Business and Technology
Education Council (BTEC) to create Edexcel with the approval
of the UK Government (Department of Education). In 1997
Sunnydale adopted the syllabus published by Edexcel, the UK
Examination Board, for the Ordinary Level and Advanced Level
General Certificate of Education Examinations.
From the year 2009, Edexcel planned to change its GCE
Ordinary Level and Advanced Level syllabus to IGCSE for both
levels. As IGCSE was absolutely a new venture of Edexcel
where the syllabus was being changed every now and then, the
school decided in the year 2008 to change its syllabus.
Since 2008 Sunnydale has adopted the syllabus published by
the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE),
under the UK Education Board, for the Ordinary and Advanced
Level.
4
ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
Courses taught in this institution lead to University of
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), under the UK
Education Board, for the Ordinary and Advanced Level. Students
sit for these examinations after completing Class X, XI and
XII respectively. They take a minimum of 07, a maximum of 09
subjects for Ordinary Level Course and a minimum of 03, a
maximum of 04 subjects for Advanced Level Course.
The academic year is from July to June. Within the academic
year there are two terms: July to December and January to
June. Report Cards are issued at the end of each term.
Till Class VIII, all subjects are compulsory. In Ordinary Level
only Bangladesh Studies, Bengali, English and Mathematics are
compulsory, other subjects are optional. In Advanced Level
only Mathematics is compulsory and other subjects are
elective.
The syllabus of the Ordinary and Advanced Level is given by
the same overseas examinations authorities i.e., the University
of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), UK. The
structure of the curricula at both the Levels gradually moulds
the students and equips them to successfully face the
challenges in their tertiary education.
Sunnydale’s policy prohibits ranking as it creates unhealthy
competition and jealousy among peers. Moreover, it puts
parental pressure on a child which is psychologically detrimental
to their mental growth.
Sunnydale Curriculum
In order to be well prepared to start the Ordinary Level
syllabus in Grade IX, the whole curriculum from Grade I to
VIII is designed in such a systematic and methodical way that
5
strives to develop the intellectual, creative and physical
abilities of a child needed in each class till Advanced Level.
The curriculum of the school includes the following subjects.
Playgroup
to K.G.II English, Bengali, Mathematics, Islamiat, Bangladesh
Studies, Art, Games and Music.
Class I
and II Bangladesh Studies, Bengali (Literature and
Language), English (Literature and Language),
Mathematics, Science, Islamiat, Moral Science,
General Knowledge, Art, Games and Music.
Class III
and IV Besides the above mentioned subjects Geometry is
added in Mathematics and as new subjects
History, Geography and Computer Studies are
introduced. In the Computer Laboratory students
learn to prepare Project work. Laboratory work
(Science) and Library class start from this level.
From Class III onwards Dance, Debate, Drama and
Recitation are included in the co-curricular
activities.
Class V For this class Algebra is added in Mathematics.
Class VI
to VIII At this level the subject Science is divided and
taught separately as Physics, Chemistry and
Biology. Economics is added as a new subject from
Class VII onwards. Scouting starts from Class VI.
Class IX
and X In these classes the two years’ syllabus of
Ordinary Level published by the University of
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), UK is
followed, including only the subjects Sunnydale
offers such as Additional Mathematics,
Bangladesh Studies, Bengali, Biology, Business
Studies, Chemistry, Economics, English Language,
Mathematics D, Physics and Principles of Accounts.
6
Class XI
and XII In these classes the two years’ syllabus of
Advanced Level published by the University of
Cambridge International Examinations (CIE), UK is
followed, including only the subjects Sunnydale
offers such as Accounting, Biology, Business,
Chemistry, Economics, Further Mathematics, Law,
Mathematics and Physics.
INFRASTRUCTURE For academic and administrative purposes the school is divided
into three sections: the Junior Section, the Middle Section
and the Senior Section.
Junior Section This section covers classes from Playgroup to Kindergarten II.
Students of this section are in their first stage of learning
where they begin their preschool and early learning. Children
being very young at this stage have impressionable mind that
needs a caring environment. Starting with training to hold a
pencil through games, songs, story-telling and a lot of cajoling,
they end up being capable and confident pupils who can clearly
express themselves both in speech and in writing.
Middle Section This section covers classes from Class I to VII. From here
they begin their primary education. Here the curriculum and
co-curricular activities are combined to offer a variety of
learning opportunities that enable each student to attain
individuality and develop academic and personal (social) growth.
It encourages each student in the development of a healthy
and positive self image.
Senior Section This section covers classes from Class VIII to XII. To
compliment the curriculum extensive co-curricular and extra-
curricular activities are combined that strive to meet the
7
educational, social and emotional needs of the early adolescent.
This adolescent is viewed as a unique character coping with a
changing body, changing interests and changing relationships.
It facilitates the whole programme to enhance social
interaction, healthy recreation, leadership, self-discipline and
self-confidence and also to develop the intellectual, creative
and physical abilities which a child needs beyond the school
years, i.e., in their tertiary education.
Locations It is an inevitable fact that residential areas of Dhaka,
especially Dhanmondi is presently in the process of being
converted into Apartment Complexes which leaves us very
little scope to choose a particular area as a permanent location
for our school. For this reason the school may be relocated
from time to time, keeping Parents informed in advance so
that they may plan the future placement of their children in
this school. At present Sunnydale is located in the following
five locations.

The academic atmosphere and formal setting of the school
demand sober attire that reflects a prim and proper
demeanour. The main purpose of the school uniform is to
11
maintain uniformity in appearance to avoid disparities in socio-
economic condition. As school uniform plays a vital role in a
student’s life, it is compulsory to follow the conditions mentioned
below:
Cleanliness and personal hygiene must be maintained.
Students are not allowed to wear their uniforms in any
fashionable style.

allowed.
Students who highlight, colour, or tint their hair, are not
allowed to attend school till their hair returns to the
natural colour.

tattoos etc.
The school uniform is the emblem of the school. The
school does not tolerate any form of inappropriate behaviour
during supervised school trips. Students are to behave in a
befitting manner so as not to bring shame or discredit to
Sunnydale. Students must keep in mind that when in school

front of the school gates or any residence on either side of
the school buildings are prohibited. Double parking is also
strictly forbidden.
14
DISCIPLINE AND CODE OF CONDUCT
In the final measure of all things Sunnydale is more than an
institution. It is the sum total of the life experiences of its
school community, especially its students’ past, present and
future. Years from now Sunnydale will be valued not so much
for its academic achievements, neither for its buildings and
resources, nor for its efficiency or adherence to institutional
guidelines and regulations, Sunnydale would be valued for the
mannerism of its graduates reflected in their interactions
with the outside world.
A. Student Conduct expected at Sunnydale Sunnydale’s enduring legacy can be defined by its Alumni’s
achievements, values and beliefs attained with positive actions,
knowledge, intelligence, creativity etc. tempered by spirituality,
compassion and an uncompromising sense of justice. If only a
percentage of Sunnydalians endeavour to live and breathe the
ethos of their Alma Mater they will have carried the flame of
our common humanity to the mountain top and we can rest easy
knowing that after years of striving our work is done.
It is believed that a better relationship among the school
administrators, students and their immediate families can be
maintained if there is a clear understanding of what is
expected of a student. Rules and regulations have been formed
to govern all aspects of the daily school routine. These rules
have been put together as a result of a broad consensus of
school administrators, teachers and parents.
A great emphasis is put upon general discipline and it is
expected that all school rules are strictly observed by all
the students of Sunnydale. In the case of infringement,
the school reserves the right to take such actions as may be
judged necessary at the absolute discretion of the school
authorities. This may include suspension, withdrawal request
15
or expulsion of any student from the school at any time
during the course of the year.
B. Awareness of the Rules and Regulations
In order to maintain consistency and a positive congenial school
environment the school expects its students to abide by the
following rules:
1. Students and their families are expected to know and
follow the rules and regulations of the school. Ignorance
or negligence of any of the rules is not tolerated. Thus no
exception will be made even in the case of breaking a rule
for the first time.
2. They must be respectful, polite and cooperative with their
peers, all teachers and other staff.
3. Since a strong emphasis is put on English, students should
speak in English both in and out of the classroom. If they
need to speak in Bengali, it must be in good Bengali with
proper pronunciation.
4. Students are responsible for proper use and care of school
property such as library books, furniture, laboratory
equipment etc. They should refrain from scribbling or
scratching on school’s walls, desks, seats etc. Parents/
Guardians of a student is deemed responsible to repair or
pay for the replacement of any damaged school property
when it is determined that the damage was caused by the
student as a result of negligence or ill intention.
5. After replacement or repair of the damaged property, any
leftover amount is donated to the community service fund.
6. Students should keep the school premises clean by
throwing litter in the bins. After having soft drink empty
bottles must be returned to the canteen or thrown in the
bins. Students may be asked to clean the field if they drop
litter.
16
7. Students selected to represent Sunnydale as a team in
different sports and competitions must attend all the
practice sessions. Students must wear the garments
chosen to represent the school at any sports competition.
Participation in any school activity is part of the school
curriculum. Though passing examinations successfully is very
important, nevertheless achieving awards and certificates
for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities is equally
important as these certificates also assist a student, to a
certain extent, for placement in universities abroad.
8. Students of Class XI and XII can bring mobile phones
(not very expensive and with limited applications) to
school, but they must leave them at the office during
school hours and collect them when leaving the school
premises.
9. Students taking Chemistry as a subject must wear an
apron and a protective eyeglass; otherwise they will not be
allowed to attend their practical classes.
10. It is noted with a sense of increasing concern that
roadside vendors selling unhygienic and unwholesome food
do a brisk business outside the school gates. The food of
dubious nutritional value also has the added potential of
posing a very real threat to the life and health of our
students. Hepatitis and Typhoid are just two of the
diseases that can result from consumption of food which
has no assurance of quality control. The school cannot be
expected to assume the liability for diseases or cases of
fatal food poisoning, which may be the consequence of
eating unhealthy food outside the school premises.
Therefore, students are forbidden to patronize these
vendors and any student doing so will be subjected to
strong disciplinary action.
17
11. Students may be detained after school to complete
unfinished work or asked to clean the field after tiffin
break as a punishment for any infringement of school
rules.
12. Any student who faces disciplinary action for any wrongdoing
may be grounded for a certain period of time starting
from a day to a whole term. Any class work or test
missed during this period may affect their grades but they
are not allowed to sit for a make-up later.
C. Rules to be maintained during examinations 1. Parents are requested to pick up their children from school
as soon as their examination is over for each day.
2. Students are not allowed to enter school premises with a
bag or any text books/exercise books on those days.
They can only bring transparent bags or pencil cases during
examinations to carry stationery and calculator.
Students are strictly prohibited to borrow any stationery
or calculator etc. in the examination hall. Failure to
follow this rule may result in deduction of marks from
their examination scripts. During examinations students
must use ballpoint pen only.
3. Any student, who is found to be in possession of any
means of cheating (torn pages from textbooks, small pieces
of paper with text, books, clipboards/files with text on
them etc.) or caught helping any other student to cheat,
can be expelled from the school then and there without
any prior notice.
4. In case of any examination not held due to unavoidable
circumstances, that examination will be held on a later
date. A prior notice is usually given in such cases.
5. Students must be in proper school uniform and shoes or
else they are not allowed to sit for their examinations.
18
D. Misconduct Every student at Sunnydale shares the responsibility of
maintaining a positive and safe academic environment.
Therefore, all students must conduct themselves with decorum
and decency in school at all times. Their behaviour should not
show disregard to school discipline and disobedience or
disrespect to any member of the school community.
Any inappropriate or unethical behaviour is considered as
breach of school discipline and amounts to misconduct and
any extreme case may result in dismissal of the accused student
from the school. The following are some acts and commissions
considered as misconduct at the school.
1. Improper school uniform- Students, who do not wear
proper school uniform or fail to follow the instructions
given in this regard, face stern disciplinary action, i.e.,
they are not allowed to attend any of the classes for that
day even if they have any tests, marked class work or
surprise tests. As a disciplinary action if a student misses
any of the aforementioned work, they are not allowed to
sit for a make-up.
2. Grouping- Any sort of grouping among students is strictly
forbidden. Stern disciplinary action is taken if a student
gets involved in any sort of grouping, violence and anti-
social or rowdy behaviour such as bullying, fighting, verbal
or physical abuse.
3. Inappropriate Behaviour- The school does not tolerate any
form of inappropriate behaviour during school supervised
trips too. Students are to behave in a befitting manner so
as not to bring shame or discredit to the school.
Students must keep in mind that when in school uniform,
they represent Sunnydale.
4. Obnoxious Activities outside the school- Any student
also must not get involved in any such activity outside the
school which may bring a bad name to Sunnydale.
19
5. Inappropriate Language- Use of unacceptable informality
in any language is strongly discouraged. Use of slang/ vulgar/
indecent/nasty words especially swear-words against any
member of the school community, is emphatically forbidden.
Any student using such language can face disciplinary
action and may even be expelled.
6. Indecency- Since Sunnydale is co-educational, decency,
formality and decorum are essential requirements in the
relationship of boys and girls. The school does not tolerate
any sort of inappropriate physical contact (hugging or
touching each other in any form). Such actions call for
disciplinary actions and may result in expulsion.
7. Use of internet, newspaper etc., to vilify school-
Students are prohibited from uploading indecent pictures
or commenting whatsoever against the school on the
internet via any website (Facebook, Twitter, Messenger,
e-mail etc.)
Students found uploading false information, negative
comments or disfigured images of their peers, teachers
or political personalities on the facebook or sending
obscene video clipping through MMS to others will be
facing charges of Cyber Crime and expelled then and
there from the school.
8. Cheating- Any student of a section of the same class found
leaking the questions of any tests, marked class work or
surprise tests to their peers of another section may face
severe punishment.
E. Enrolment of a student can be terminated for any of
the following reasons
1. Accusation of cheating – Any student, who is found to be
in possession of any means of cheating (torn pages from
textbooks, small pieces of paper with text, books,
clipboards/files with text on them etc.) or caught helping

H. Procedures for deciding a case of suspension/
withdrawal request / expulsion from Sunnydale
Students responsible for gross violation of the accepted
school norms relating to academic and social conduct are
consequently asked to leave Sunnydale. Sunnydale teachers
and management have a clear mandate from its Board of
Directors to follow the due process before any final
decision on withdrawal request/expulsion of any student is
taken.
22
The summarized process of the withdrawal/expulsion is as
follows:
1. The initial report of allegations of any wrongdoing by a
student is documented by the reporting teacher and
provided to the class teacher.
2. First, the accused is given a chance to give his/her
statement of the incident.
3. Secondly, a comprehensive attempt is made to substantiate/
discount this initial report through cross checking of
various sources such as Class Teachers, Subject Teachers,
Floor Incharge, Student Counsellor, classmates/peers, and
other staff. All opinions and evidence are meticulously
documented to make this process as transparent as
possible.
4. During the entire process of cross-checking the accused
student is allowed to attend school.
5. Unless there is enough clear and indisputable evidence of
wrongdoing, the process of inquiry is terminated with a
recommendation to the appropriate authority to allow the
student to continue in school.
6. To facilitate a meaningful and deliberate process of inquiry
and avoid shallow decision making on a child’s future, the
process can continue from a week to over a month.
7. Once a clear case of a student’s gross improper behaviour
is established on the basis of collected evidence, the
student file is sent to the Student Counsellor. After going
through the file, the Counsellor along with the committee
makes the final decision, which is also finally endorsed by
the management.
8. The parents of the accused student are then formally
requested to withdraw their child from Sunnydale.
23
I. Use of School Premises
1. The school premises are opened to students only half an
hour before the assembly.
2. Students are not allowed to leave school premises before
the school hours are over for that day. They are also
instructed to leave school premises as soon as their school
is over every day.
3. Boys are not allowed to remain on school premises after
they finish their classes.
4. The school premises are not allowed to be used by students
for their personal reasons, such as using the school and its
periphery as a “pick up” and “drop off” point, if they have
once left the school premises or have not attended the
school for that day.
5. Students are forbidden to enter the school premises or
any part of it after school hours without the permission
of the authority. On the days of games practice sessions
they must not enter or use any classroom under any
circumstances.
ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL
a. If a student is absent from school, a parent’s or guardian’s
application must be submitted to the class teacher on
his/her joining the school. If the student is absent on
health grounds for more than 03 days, a parent’s
application along with a doctor's certificate must be
submitted to the Class Teacher when the student resumes
classes.
b. Parents are requested to keep in close contact and to
notify the school (preferably in writing) in case of illness
of their children who are in Sunnydale.
24

attendance is required for Class XI and XII to qualify to
register for Cambridge International Examinations.
d. Students who remain absent from school for a continuous
period of 30 days without permission, for any reason,
other than sickness, are considered withdrawn from the

NO MAKE-UP TEST POLICY
There is no make-up test for any student who misses a test
due to absence for illness or any other reason.
Students, who miss tests for participating in any school
activity i.e., debate, games, cultural function etc., will be
permitted to sit for make-up tests.
Students of Class XI and XII, who fall sick may come to
school within school hours and sit for the test on the same
day of the test and then leave. An application must be
brought from the Parents in this regard.
INSTRUCTIONS TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS
We, at Sunnydale, have always believed that the quality of
education that we impart is an advertisement enough of our
goodwill and determination in contributing to the academic
prowess of our student community. Therefore, the school
management would earnestly request those associated with
the media to avoid any reference to the school’s name in
any propaganda or commercial means, as it goes strongly
against the school’s policy.
25
a. Parents are requested to see that all the school rules are
observed meticulously by their children.
b. Any student, who wants to publish their write-up in any
newspaper/magazine covering any school programme, must
get it approved by the school before publication.
c. Any notice from the school must be acknowledged by the
Parents and where required the acknowledgment slip must
be duly signed and returned to the school on the next
working day.
d. Students should be picked up from school as soon as their
classes are over each day. The school does not accept
responsibility for students who remain on the premises for
more than half an hour after school is over.
e. Any request made by the parents over the telephone
regarding their children's departure from the school
during/after school hours are not entertained by the
school. Parents/Guardians must come personally to the
office to give any instruction in this regard.
f. Students cannot be picked up from school in-between the
classes unless they fall sick in the school or there is news
of death in the family. Office must be informed about
the authorized person who would pick the student at that
time.
g. Parents are not allowed to enter the classrooms during
school hours because it causes a lot of inconvenience and
interferes with the academic atmosphere of the school.
Parents/ Guardians are requested to refrain from entering
the school premises during school hours unless it is for any
official purpose.
h. Parents may meet teachers to discuss any issue regarding
their child by making a phone call at the office for an
appointment.
26
i. Parents are advised not to send their children to school if
the child suffers from any infectious disease. Any child,
whose parents disagree that their child is infected by a
contagious disease, may be examined by a doctor appointed
by the school and the doctor’s decision must be accepted.
Any such student should not send any work done at home to
school, while recovering at home.
j. Students with any broken bone may come to school at
their own risk.
k. Parents are advised not to allow their children to bring
colourful or fancy stationery to school.
l. Parents should refrain from sending anything with their
children to school in order to celebrate their birthdays.
m. Parents shall also refrain from sending anything (text
books, exercise books and any other work) during school
hours.
n. As per government rule, pirated textbooks are not
allowed.
o. Parents are requested to provide their children with
enough drinking water.
p. Food is available in the canteen at the Senior Section
and the quality of the food is maintained by outsiders.
Therefore, parents must use their own discretion in
allowing their children to buy food from the canteen.
They must not bring more than Tk. 100/- to buy tiffin.
q. Any change of address, telephone number, e-mail
address or in any information provided to the school
must be notified to the school authority immediately.
r. All the information included in the documents submitted to
the school at the time of a child’s admission are taken to
be factually correct and in keeping with all other official
documents and records.
27
The school reserves the right to reject any application
for change of factual information made after the
admission process is completed.
s. Date of Birth- The school will accept only the graduation
certificate of Ordinary Level for the record of Date of
Birth.
t. It must not be assumed that if one sibling is studying in
Sunnydale the other sibling automatically becomes eligible
for admission in the school.
u. Unauthorized Tips to Support Staff- Parents and students
are requested to refrain from giving tips to any ‘ayah’
or ‘darwan’. Such transactions are not only unauthorized
but also unethical as they compromise the integrity of
equal treatment and standing for all members of our school
community. Any such transaction is considered to be in
violation of school norms and policies and appropriate action
may be taken against both parties directly or indirectly
involved in such interactions.
v. Use of Sunnydale Logo
It was recently noticed that Sunnydale has become the
focus of various forms of programmes developed by the
media. One of these examples includes shooting of dramas
for portrayal through television channels. We are concerned
that some of the episodes which include disturbing images
of kidnapping of children using Sunnydale premises as a
backdrop, have also used the Sunnydale logo which is an
official emblem of the school. It is understandable that
the portrayal of these specific images using the Sunnydale
logo could be interpreted by the viewing public as officially
sanctioned by the Sunnydale authority. It is totally
unwarranted and baseless. In this context we would appeal
to all our valued parents and well wishers who are associated
with drama production houses, media and journalism to
kindly refrain from using Sunnydale logo in consideration of
28
the image of the school attended by their children. It is
not our intention to impede the freedom of creative and
cultural pursuits and if such portrayals use uniforms and
locations that are not personalized or focused on Sunnydale
as an institution; we cannot conceivably object to them and
therefore wish them well in all their endeavours.
Sunnydale does not have any sister concern in any other
name.
w. Standing Policy for Admission
A very authentic and clear policy is followed at Sunnydale
for admission and no donations or unsolicited benefits
whatsoever in cash or kind is accepted. No member of our
school community ever enters into such questionable
transactions.
SCHOOL YEARBOOK The school yearbook published by the school is provided to all
the students enrolled in Sunnydale. One of the objectives of
publishing the school yearbook is to allow the Parents to
become aware of the activities of a complete academic year.
It must be noted that Sunnydale does not believe in the idea
of accepting advertisements to finance the school yearbook.
This is so because it has a negative effect on the
principles of the school policy.
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMME Sunnydale explores ways in which it can also look beyond its
academic activities and play a positive and enduring role in the
life of the larger community. We feel that community
involvement of our students is an extension of the classroom
and through this they are exposed to the history, politics, and
social processes of our society. As a result students develop
compassion, empathy and an understanding of the social fabric
and heritage of which they are a part of, enabling them to
become participating, productive and involved members of the
society.
29
In an attempt to make this vision a reality and to inspire
examples of community work, such as the setting up of homes
for the elderly, philanthropy and other developmental activities
aimed to improve the socio-economic conditions of the
destitute, etc., the school makes a yearly contribution to aid
such causes.
In this respect the school expects a contribution of a nominal
sum of Tk. 300 every year from every individual student and
teacher as part of its annual contribution to these community
efforts. A notice is always given for the collection of this
donation. The Board of Directors also contributes money to this
fund. In order to maintain transparency, a written document is
given to the Parents showing details of the money/goods
collected as well as distributed.
GENERAL PROGRESS AND REPORT CARDS
a. There are two formal examinations during the school’s
academic year. As such, Progress Reports are given twice a
year: Half-yearly Report Card and Final Report Card.
b. To determine the quality of a student's school work, grade
system is followed in Report Cards. Under this system
students do not get any position in the class.
c. Examination marks account for 50% of the total mark,
which is obtained from the results of the examinations.
d. Similarly Term Marks account for 50% of the total mark,
which is obtained from class progress such as Class work,
Class Test.
e. Pass mark for each subject is 50%.
f. Final Average Marks are obtained from the total marks of
all the examinations i.e., terms (Mock Examinations inclusive)
+ half-yearly + final. Promotion depends on the Final
Average Marks as mentioned above.
30
g. Usually there is no promotion for failure in the aggregate
result because of missing class tests due to absence for
illness or otherwise. In case of a long absence due to
sickness like chicken pox, jaundice or any fracture, the
school authorities use their discretion to settle the
matter. It is also entirely at the discretion of the school
authorities to either promote or withhold the promotion of
a student who fails because of missing class tests while
participating in any school event.
Therefore, parents must see that their children do not
remain absent frequently and miss class tests.
h. If a student fails to take any of the end-of-term
Examinations (i.e., Half-yearly or Final) due to sickness or
any unavoidable circumstances, the school authority decides
whether they will be allowed to sit for a make-up
examination.
i. The school management and teachers take every issue
regarding the students of Sunnydale very seriously and take
necessary steps after careful evaluation of every matter
that comes to their attention.
The situation is no different when it comes to the critical
issue of a student not being promoted to the next class at
the end of each academic year. Class teachers along with all
the subject teachers discuss in detail the reasons for which
a student fails to achieve the requisite marks for promotion
to the next class. It is only after much consideration and in
the student’s best interest that such a decision is taken
unanimously, and the student is advised to repeat the class.
At Sunnydale delicate decisions of this nature have
always been taken after a lot of conscientious inquiry
and therefore the management would greatly appreciate
if parents do not send references or messages to
influence the school’s decisions in this regard.
31
j. Any student who gets promotion on consideration once is
not eligible to get registered through school for CIE with
the same condition in a second successive year. He/she has
to achieve good passing aggregate in the second successive
year to register.
k. Only Parents or authorized persons (carrying a letter of
authorization) can collect the Report Card and discuss the
student’s progress with the teachers in the school at the
time specified. Close cooperation in this respect is
essential. Parents are informed as to when to collect a
Report Card. Students must accompany their Parents on
the days of Report Card in their proper school uniform.
l. For any correction in the Report Card, it must be
submitted to the respective class teacher within the
stipulated time after receiving the result sheet. After this
period no correction is possible.
m. Those Parents, who cannot collect the progress report of
their children on the appointed date, may collect it later
from the office of the respective sections.
HOLIDAY
The holiday list for each year is put up on the notice board
and also attached to the school diaries every year. Students
are expected to follow this and attend school accordingly. For
additional/unforeseen holiday or any change in the dates,
advance notice (verbal or written) is given when possible.
Parents/Guardians are advised to use their discretion during
‘Hartals’ or other emergencies.
Sunnydale follows government holidays given on religious
festivals of minority groups.
The school may be kept closed for a day or two without prior
notice due to unavoidable circumstances.
32
The Accounts office and the office of all the sections of
the school also remain closed during any school holidays.
Parents are notified if these offices remain open during
any holiday.
