Forensics is the analysis

and interpretation of

evidence that is a part

of a legal investigative

process.

Forensic is from theLatin word forensismeaning used in

thecourt of law.

The first forensicautopsy wasperformed on

JuliusCaesar by the

Romanphysician

Antistius in44 B.C.

In 1836 a Scottish

Chemist named James

Marsh was the first

to use toxicology in a

jury trial.

The fingerprinting ofcriminals in the U.S. beganin the New York City PoliceDepartment in 1906. Then

in1918, Edmond Locard,suggested 12 matching

pointsas a positive fingerprintidentification.

In 1924 AugustVollmer

implementedthe first U.S.

policecrime laboratory.

Starting in 1977 the FBI

introduced the beginnings of

its Automated Fingerprint

Identification System

(AFIS) with the firstcomputerized scans

offingerprints.

1986 brought about thefirst use of DNA to solvea crime. DNA was usedin England to identifyColin Pitchfork as themurderer of two younggirls. In 1987 DNAprofiling was introduced

inthe United States

criminalcourt system.
