A fresh look at Followership : Followership is Leadership   Elizabeth C. Thach , Karen J. Thompson, and Alan Morris Sonoma State University Abstract

Followership has been an understudied topic in the academic literature and anunderappreciated topic among practitioners. Although it has always beenimportant, the study of followership has become even more crucial with theadvent of the information age and dramatic changes in the workplace. Thispaper provides a fresh look at followership by providing a synthesis of theliterature and presents a new model for matching followership styles toleadership styles. The model’s practical value lies in its usefulness for describing how leaders can best work with followers, and how followers can best work with leaders.

Dr. John Pitron Program Manager Lockheed Martin,Faculty, University of Phoenix

Abstract

Leadership is not one-dimensional; leadership is system thinking in multiple dimensions. In terms of systems thinking, the inclusion of organizational performers (followers) in the leadership process complements the notion that leaders are only responsible for about 20% of the work that is completed in an organization
