Fluid Power Applications Project Example

Principles of Engineering

What Is It?• The Powerhouse Prodigy TK-216

compact utility loader with attachments– Trencher– Auger– Ripper– Bucket– Leveler

• Used for any number of landscape and trenching applications

Power Supply & Pump• Power supplied by

Honda 16 hp v-twin• Fluid flow supplied

by gear pump– 2200 psi max– 5.8 gpm

Pump Underneath

Reservoir

• Holds 11.6 gallons of hydraulic fluid

• Located inside housing forward of engine

• Fill neck located on right side of loader

ReservoirFill neck

Controls• Lever-actuated directional spool

valves• Location

– Levers on control panel, valves under control panel

• Control– Drive: separate lever for each side,

forward, neutral, reverse– Arm: up or down– Attachment: (bucket, leveler, trencher)

curl & dump– Auxiliary: (auger, trencher) forward &

reverse

Throttle

Actuators• Double action

cylinders– Raise & lower

arm– Tilt attachment

• Rotary actuators– Drive machine– Turn auger– Turn trencher

Operation• Honda 16 hp gasoline engine

provides mechanical power to gear pump

• Gear pump draws fluid from reservoir and provides fluid flow

• Control valves direct fluid to appropriate actuators– Drive motors– Cylinders– Attachment motors

• Fluid returns to reservoir after use

Other Components• Fluid lines• Filter• Quick-connect

couplings for attachments

Pros & ConsPros

– 32 in. width allows it to reach closed-in areas such as fenced yards

– 972 lb. weight distributed on tracks doesn’t compact soil

– Easily transported to job site– Multiple attachments make it

versatileCons

– Costs $19590.00 – Approximately $175/weekend rental

fee

Summary• The PowerHouse Prodigy is a

tracked compact utility loader• Used for excavation, trenching,

digging post holes, leveling, and many other landscaping/construction jobs

• Takes the place of back-breaking wheelbarrows, shovels, and other labor-intensive hand tools
