I would like to thank all of my friends and co- riders in Evolution B and C that have helped me and encouraged me to get better and faster. When I first started, way in the back of the pack, they kept encouraging me. My one goal was to beat Bill Jenkins and Sam
Mento and I finally did it.

August 1, 2011Take action now: Keep kid motorcycles and ATVs legal!
The U.S. Senate has approved a House bill to exempt kids’ off-highway vehicles (OHVs) from the lead law that essentially bans the sale of those machines at the end of the year, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.
The bill, H.R. 2715 introduced by Reps. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) and G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), cleared the full House by a 421-2 vote on Aug. 1, and then earned approval in the Senate the same day. The bill now goes to President Obama to be signed into law.
This bill would exempt kids’ off-highway vehicles (OHV) - including kids’ dirtbikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) - from the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) of 2008. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has delayed enforcing key portions of the law until after the end of the year. Unless the CPSIA is changed by then, the sale of child-sized dirtbikes and ATVs will effectively be banned. The AMA has been at the forefront of the fight to exclude child-sized motorcycles and ATVs from the CPSIA for more than two years. As a result, every single member of Congress, as well as members of the CPSC, has received powerful statements from members of the AMA and the All-Terrain Vehicle
Association (ATVA), which is a partner organization of the AMA. The AMA magnified these efforts through its “Kids Just Want to Ride” campaign.
Thank you to those FTR members who submitted videos and/or wrote to their representatives urging passage of the bill. (Scott, Jenni and Alli Lamb’s video received Honorable Mention in the AMA’s contest.)
From Hare Scrambles Committee Chairman Mike Belle:
- The following rule was passed and will be enforced this season -
Purpose: To create an enforceable safety zone in the chicane and around downed riders.
Chapter VI - Hare Scrambles Rules - A. General
Add:15. The ribboned off area of the scoring chicane shall be considered a safety area. Any section of the track where an EMT or track worker is attending to a downed rider is also considered a safety area and it will extend to 20 feet on either side of the downed rider. If there is a
course worker signaling a rider to slow down with hand motions or a flag, the safety area will start at that point. Once a rider enters a safety area they are to maintain an even safe speed, without hard acceleration or braking or anything that would kick up avoidable dust or dirt. There should be no passing in the safety zone unless another rider is completely stopped and it is safe to pass. Failure to follow this rule will result in the rider being docked by one finishing position or more, up to disqualification from the event, subject to the referee’s discretion.

6 | Florida Trail Riders Magazine | August 2011
Hello all my fellow FTR members and families. I hope everyone has had a
fun and safe summer...I am, as I hope you are, ready to get back to racing. I miss hanging with all my FTR family. So, I thought before the season gets under way, I would cover a few things that everyone needs to keep in mind. This is the “So you can’t say you didn’t know” message.
The referee stuff:1. Remember you MUST have the appropriate color backgrounds and numbers and/or letters on your bikes/quads.
2. We will be randomly doing sound checks.
3. No spark arrestor equals no race. No discussion. And, yes, there will be spot checks on the line.
4. Saturday practice line up will be as we have done it: Big bikes will be first, followed by 85s then 65s and lastly parents riding with 65s. Parents are NOT allowed to ride with 85s. Parents - please remind your riders of two things: First, it’s practice and there is no trophy for finishing 1st (aggressive riding will not be tolerated.) Second, please get to practice promptly and patiently wait your turn. Everyone will get to go.
5. Sunday practice guys and girls: please line up in rows of 5 (similar to an enduro start). This allows us to rapidly check
wrist bands and tech stickers as well as get you out on the trail in an orderly manner. As always, we will increase or decrease time between rows based on trail conditions.
6. Riders MUST have helmet, riding boots, goggles or other eye protection, and no shorts.
7. Pit riding is a No, No and disqualifications will be handed out for those that feel they need to try the system. If you are not sure what pit riding is, please refer to the rule book for clarification.
8. Remember you MUST be 16 years of age to operate a golf cart, side by side, etc. If you look under 25, carry your driver’s license with you. This is your warning! P.S. If you are old enough to operate a vehicle, remember it must be done in a safe manner. An example: Seven kids in a two seat golf cart is not a safe manner.
The safety stuff:1. Although we have had many good summer rains, there are areas of the state that continue to have a high fire index. Please make sure that your camp has a fire extinguisher.
2. Please remember to always stay with your bike if you have a mechanical issue while out on the track. There are many course workers and safety crew out on the trail and we will get you and your ride out safely. We do not need you getting lost in the woods. Kids - this will scare your parents and cause gray hair.
3. Riders - please do not move any injured rider unless they are in immediate danger. Moving them could cause more injury. Send a rider to notify a course worker and stay with the injured rider until help arrives.
4. Riders - it is still very hot and humid out there. Remember to hydrate. Also if you get over heated, stop riding, get out of the sun if at all possible and remove as much clothing as possible. Helmets and boots hold in a lot of heat. If you have extra cool water, pour it on your head. If you get dizzy while riding, this is a sign of heat exhaustion - STOP riding because the next thing you will get to experience will be a crash...
5. Remember to slow down when you see the yellow flag. Resume racing after you are completely clear of the incident. The yellow flag or a course worker waving means there is an incident ahead. Proceed with caution and respect your fellow injured rider.
6. Lastly, please remember that clubs put up ribbon for a reason. It may be to mark off a ditch (getting your motor home or trailer stuck stinks,) or an area that the land owner does not want patrons in or because it is a Fire and EMS lane. Please respect these areas and lanes. It doesn’t mean drive through the ribbon ‘cause it’s dark out or because you think you deserve to park there. Please keep in mind that there is no prize to see how close to the sign up trailer you can get with your pit vehicle. When an emergency happens, we will not have time to find the owners of the vehicles and get them moved. A little common sense goes a long way.
I look forward to seeing all my FTR friends and family at the races. I am always available via email or cell. Feel free to stop by my rig at anytime with suggestions, comments, complaints. Remember that, regardless of time of day or night, if you have a medical issue, find either myself or a member of the Safety Team for assistance!

“Carol, you guys/gals did an OUTSTANDING job! Thank YOU!”- Kevin Vaughn
“We had a great time. Thanks to all who made it possible.” - Chad Hunter
“I just want to take a moment to thank all those who attended our 40th Awards Banquet. It was a great success, and I want all those who attended to know you, made a great success. It looked like all were having a great time, and except for the small technical glitch, we had no other issues or problems. I want to personally thank the Banquet Committee again, because with out them and all the volunteers it would not be possible. So, FTR members, when you see them this coming season at what ever events you attend please thank them, they are the one’s who truly made this happen. From the bottom of my heart...Thank You. Thank You, Thank You. Yours Truly,” -Carol Preston
“Great Banquet, Wanted to thank all the Banquet Committee people, job well done. Sold out of Banquet tickets, WOW.” - Ed Lukosavich
“First class all the way. All the folks who put this on deserve an award. This was the first banquet that me and my family attended. We heard a lot of bad, bad comments on past banquets, so I was really offended by the price of omission, by the end of the night my only complaint was that it was not long enough. We walked out of there with over six hundred dollars of door prizes and ate so much of that great baked chicken that we did not eat ‘til lunch the following day. I have a new respect on our members, made lots of new friends, can not wait for the new season and next year’s banquet.Thank you so much for the great time me and my family had. What a great organization we have.” - Jimmy Frazier
“I just want to thank everyone who took the time to organize this years banquet. I met a lot of people and had positive conversations
with everyone. Thanks a lot FTR. I am already looking forward to next one. OH yea, before I forget.... my jacket fits GREAT!!!!”

The next season will be here before we know it. I’m hoping to make it out for most of the races this year. Maybe I’ll even swing a leg
over and start something...I still dream of one day making a comeback!
The August issue includes highlights from the banquet, which was my first time at
the Dolphin hotel, and a list of Hare Scrambles rule changes, so make sure to take note. For the cover story with Lee Smith, who I met by chance one night last season when he stopped at the gas station I was filling up at; I recognized the backgrounds and corresponding number plates and ambushed him; read
more about it in the September issue.
W ith each month’s magazine, I’m learning more about the editing and publishing schedule and reaching out to companies
to help promote FTR as a nonprofit organization dedicated to “responsible motorcyclists.” Last
month’s magazine went out to more than 1,400 addresses. That’s one of the largest mailing lists I’ve had in my download folder.
As always, I encourage reader submissions and letters to the editor, and it would be great to see more info graphics or charts
from the members - like how many members cross over to other series: enduros, hare scrambles and motocross? Imagine if all of the FTR members put their talents and skill sets together what could happen...We already spend our weekends together!
In closing, if you missed the banquet this year - you had to be there - but there were a number of high-dollar donations raffled off to a few lucky
members (after all the awards were handed out) and I would love to hear from the winners, especially the ones who walked away with the training at Moto Endurance headquarters with Robb Beams.
It was great seeing everyone in their plain clothes, though it made the leaders harder to recognize! Braaap!

Proposal #10 - Proposal passedReason for rule change proposal:Side number plates on current model dirt bikes are shrinking in size. The newest KTM plate is so small it is nearly impossible to be 5” high numbers on pre-printed backgrounds. There is also a trend to free up more of the number plate area for advertising of sponsors. This proposal recommends keeping current rule of 5 inch minimum number size for the front plate only and allowing 3.25 inch high numbers on side plates. The number of 3.25 is what HBD Moto Grafx has been printing for many current FTR H/S racers

What is an Enduro? From the Greenville Enduro Riders Association: Check crew says go, ride as hard as you can or want to for 10-15 miles or so, check crew scores your card, take a break, ease down the trail to the next going in check and repeat about 4 more times. Go home tired, happy, maybe with a tropy.
What do I need?
Requirements: FTR membership and a forestry approved spark arrester.
Which bike?Flyers will specify rules per each event, but almost every event allows all off-road motorcycles to compete. Certain series/events have Jr. Enduros for the younger folks.
How to prepare: Meet the people on your row when you go to the first check in. The goal for your first enduro is finishing because they are often longer in distance than most novices ride in a day. Key off of the people on your row so that you are always on time entering each check.
How’s the Course? Each event will have different terrain to tackle, but all events are rideable by all skillsets.
What about costs?
Events range from $40-60, but you will ride land that is only open once a year. Most events are 50-70 miles in length, so you get your money’s worth!
How to enter: Pre-register via the mail by downloading a flyer from www.floridatrailriders.org or register the day of the event.

Proposal #1 - Proposal passed
Reason for Rule change proposal:There have been issues with starting Junior A and Junior B on the same line due to the competitive nature of these racers.
Current Rule:
Chapter VIHare Scrambles Rules
C. Event Rules2. Only the following divisions may be run together at the same time with one minute between starting different groups. The races will be run at the times listed unless permission to change isapproved by the Hare Scramble Committee prior to publication of the flyer. Proposal #2 - Proposal passed
Reason for Rule change proposal:Large number of specialty racers Sunday morning has resulted in as many as 35 racers on Row 2(SSenA and Mas A) and over 40 racers on Row 6 (Mas B and Golden Mas A). These large numbers are considered a safety hazard. Currently, the starters are splitting row 6 into two starts which effectively makes 12 rows.

3. Clubs can either split consolidated rows, or start consecutive rows together to relieve congestion at the start, with the approval of the HS Chairman or Referee, but can not change the Starting Order. In the event that a course is under 8 miles in length or lap times are expected to be under 15 minutes by A riders, it is recommended that the clubs consolidate Super Senior A and Master A to one row and Vet B and Senior B be consolidated. The same applies to dusty conditions that require 2 minute interval between rows. Proposal #3 - Proposal passed
Reason for Rule change proposal:The proposed change / amendment are regarding the safety of the peewee and super peewee quad riders. The current rule places both classes ranging from 50cc to 90cc quads practicing at the same time. During this season we have had a consistently large turnout for quads. There have been in excess of 10+ peewee quads and 10+ super peewee quads, placing 20+ quads from 50cc – 90cc on the track at the same time. Parents have expressed concern throughout the season regarding the tightness of the tracks and lack of areas for safe passing and have taken it upon themselves to split the 15 minute practice time in half to resolve the safety issue as easily as possible. This quick fix however gives each class a practice time of only 7 ½ minutes. In order to give the riders adequate practice time and the parents’ peace of mind I am requesting individual practice times for each class.

Reason for Rule change proposal:This rule needs to be deleted because it is was a

Chaplain’sorner
Hello friends. Last week was incredible. Not only did the Dickson’s spend eight wonderful days vacationing with some of
our FTR friends (the Jenkins family) but the FTR annual awards banquet was incredible.
First, let me say “Thank You” to Carol Preston. I have known Carol since the beginning. She has been a part of our ORRM group (Off-Road Racing Ministries) from the second or third event she ever attended. Over these past few years, it has been wonderful watching her move into leadership positions and immerse herself into this organization. Saying she is a hard worker is an understatement. The lady is a queen bee. Not only can she direct and encourage others to do their best with a project, she will work herself to the bone to be sure it is right. Carol, thank you for your time!
However, she will be the first to tell you that she was not alone in this year-long project. I will not even begin to start naming names. I’m sure there were many behind the scenes FTR men and women, that made this year’s banquet the success it was.
To those unsung heroes, thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty!
If you attended the banquet this year, you saw that I was the recipient of some surprising accolades. To our President, Ford Snodgrass, thank you for presenting me with the coveted President’s Award. That was a real shocker. I not only appreciate your kind gesture to me, but your concern for this fine organization as well. By the way, since we race the same class, does this mean that you are going to pull over and let me by?
To the presenters, Rocky Gavins and Donna Hazeltines, and the entire FTR family, the kind words and picture you gave to me was awesome. Thank you, Glenn Gardner for the unbelievable action shots of me and my two boys. We already have it hanging on our wall in our home. My family loves this picture.
Once again, I want to say thank you to the clubs that supported us with encouraging words and hearty smiles. We especially appreciate the opportunity when you allow us to park close to sign-up so folks can find us for our church service on Saturday night and I can more easily navigate “Donkey” to the starting area with the sound equipment for the rider’s meeting.
As I said from the stage at the Dolphin last Saturday night, the folks in FTR are our family and what a great family it is. It is amazing how paying your membership dues can bring you into such a warm fellowship. However, never forget that there is another family that is even greater, the Family of God. God has one desire for your life; He longs to know you… personally. My prayer for each of you is that God will continue to draw you closer to Him each day. I look forward to seeing you on the line at the first event.
Have a great remaining summer!
Your friend,Andy Dickson

Rex McCarty...
Alex McCarty, 12, runs Mini Quad and has been riding since
he was 8. Rex, 47, has been battling in the FTR MX series for the last three years.
When asked of his sponsors, Rex said, “We are sponsorless. “It’s all about the fun, the
enjoyment that we have being outdoors and the competition. I’ve made new friends in FTR
this year.”
What do you like about FTR? “There’s not really a lot of series out there that offer
quad racing and also I was looking for kind of a family-friendly environment. That’s
what brought me to FTR because that’s the environment that they create for the families
and everything. Often times, people go to the FTR MX races, they’re there for the weekend;
it’s more of an experience rather than a hardcore competition.
What do you think of the Hare Scrambles? FTR is very well known for the Hare
Scrambles series; a lot of GNCC guys are out there riding in the series training and that itself brings a lot of great exposure...It’s the only game in the state so everybody comes from everywhere. They’re all coming to the
races.

... joined FTR for the MX series. “My son and I experience Quad MX together in a family-orientated, competitive environment,” he said. “My son is 12 and I am 47 and we are bonded so tight through competing together. We race quads and are committed to run everything we can attend within our power. I have enjoyed making new friends and competing in the FTR series.”
