Sortie Brief: Instrument test flight Flight Number: B513 Date: 2 March 10 Sortie Aims: To compare CAPS with CIP (with anti-shattering tips). Sortie Location: Within cloud along the Chilbolton radial. Sortie Summary: Perform a series of runs through cloud, covering a range in altitude and temperature. Measurements will be in deep cirrus. The runs are along the direction scanned by Chilbolton radar to identify large-scale structure in cloud. Sortie Detail:

a) Take off and climb for transit (FL200) to pre-defined operating area. b) Perform a series of 10minute straight and level runs at various altitudes

specified by Mission Scientist. Ideally just below cloud base and throughout cloud. Legs should extend over Chilbolton.

c) Where the radar identifies a feature of interest, the leg may be interrupted to fly a more intensive pattern through that feature.

d) Where a defined layer of interest (such as a shallow layer of supercooled liquid water) is identified, the long leg may be flown as a saw-tooth leg with ascents/descents at 1000ft/min, extending 1000ft above and below that layer.

e) Profile descent through cloud region from above above cloud-top to 50ft . f) Return to Cranfield.
