For wellness coach Gary Drisdelle, you aren’t just what you eat. You’re also what you do, how you sleep and how you de-stress.
The continuing list can be daunting. Add worrying about the health of the planet into the mix and you’ve got a recipe for, well, pretty much the opposite of wellness.
And Drisdelle knows it. That’s how the Thornhill resident came to write and publish the book Healthyism – Healthy I, Healthy World!.
Its central message is that, instead of fretting about the big picture, people can improve the wellbeing of the world by becoming personally healthy.
“If you don’t have health, you’re not going to give everything else the best it can possibly have,” he says.
While he now works only with clients privately, Drisdelle operated wellness clinics for 15 years. His experiences led him to conclude that enhanced physical health improves mental health, putting one in a better state to care for others.
While the body is forgiving when people are in their teens and 20s, Drisdelle says eventually unhealthy habits snowball and it starts to break down rapidly. So the best thing is to start by making the decision one wants to be healthier sooner rather than later, and find a compelling rea-son to stick to it.
And he quotes the old cliché: one step at a time. That makes things simpler, but there is no easy way, he admits. “It’s easy as brushing your teeth,” he said. “It took your parents a long
time to teach you to brush your teeth.” Drisdelle suggests avoiding eating too many grains, looking for foods
that are as whole and unprocessed as possible, and exercising the whole body regularly.
You don’t have to be a health freak to follow those guidelines, he says. When feeling good, people can afford to stick to them 80 percent of the time, staying 100 percent on track only when they need to recover from stress or illness.
That’s a policy that Drisdelle and his wife, a registered dietitian, and their three kids strive to follow themselves.
“We do try to walk the talk,” he said. The 50-year-old Drisdelle says he was not health-conscious until later
in life. “I was basically going around like everyone else, without any con-
cern,” he said.Originally from New Brunswick, Drisdelle has lived in Thornhill
since 1997. Although he doesn’t have a degree in the medical field, he says he’s studied massage therapy, martial arts and personal training, and been to literally hundreds of conferences on health and rehabilitation.
He originally planned to complete Healthyism in three months, but it ended up taking three years. However, he says he enjoyed doing some-thing new.
“I like the challenge of new things.”That’s why, he says, he’s also learned to fly planes as a hobby pilot,
to scuba dive in the Red Sea and the Caribbean, and to speak French and Spanish.

with a series of workbooks in the future. While the book provides valuable guidance, Drisdelle says he also feels that
life coaching can be of help to anyone. “I think everyone should have either an elder, or a coach or a mentor on their
side,” he said. He draws fulfillment from seeing people he’s coached grow, too. “It’s a shiver up my spine when I see that happen with people.”

As a physiothera-pist and graduate stu-dent pursuing a Mas-ter’s degree in Clinical Health Sciences, I must admit that I was skepti-cal about the practice of Osteopathy. I wondered if there was any scien-tific evidence to support this type of approach. However I had under-gone medical investiga-tions for some of my problems, which had
not uncovered any solu-tions, and other more traditional treatment had failed to produce last-ing changes. Therefore when a friend recom-mended Atily Gunaratne at Osteopathy Associ-ates, I decided to even-tually try this type of treatment.
The chief problems I was experiencing were digestive disturbanc-es which sometimes caused heart palpita-tions, sinus problems with occasional head-aches, and despite exer-cises, problems improv-ing my upper back flexibility and overall posturing. It is now sev-eral months later and I have improved signifi-
cantly. My digestion is considerably better (rarely have heartburn and burping now), the palpitations have almost gone and my overall posturing has improved. In the fall when I usual-ly experience my worst sinus headaches from allergy season, I hardly had any headaches and I did not require any aller-gy medications. Over-all I have an improved sense of well being. As a result of my experi-ences, I would highly recommend osteopathic treatment with Atily Gunaratne. In fact, I have advised several of my friends to go and they as well have found positive benefits.

Canadian research shows nutrition to be key to school performance

Canadian research shows that a child’s behaviour, learning capacity, cognitive performance and school attendance are affected by nutrition.
“It is important for parents to provide children with healthy foods to keep them alert throughout the day,” says registered dietitian Cara Rosenbloom. “Healthy food consumption directly relates to bet-ter learning.”
It is easy to incorporate foods into your child’s diet that are great for brain development and knowledge retention.

ports the normal physical development of the brain, eyes and nerves.
