Madison
Presbyterian Church Madison Presbyterian Church was organized in
1815. This building, erected by the First Presbyter-
ians in Madison, was built in 1846-1847, following
a fire that destroyed their earlier sanctuary on
Main Street. In 1911, members began the discus-
sion of installing art glass windows and two years
later, the project was completed by the Indianapo-
lis Art Glass Company, Indianapolis, IN. Recent
evidence shows that prior to the installation of the
art glass windows, the existing wooden sash had
windows of square panes of glass and the upper
ventilators were of multiple panes. The windows,
Arts and Crafts in style, use opalescent and
streaky glass in colors of amber, greens, and
browns. The motifs depict stylized quatrefoils,
spires, Greek columns and fleur-de-lis designs.
The windows commemorate early members and
church leaders and one window is dedicated to
“Our Youth in Christ’s Service.”
Windows are view-
able from exterior
only.

First Christian
Church
(Disciples of Christ) In 1989, the period stained glass windows of 1899
and the interior furnishings of the church were lost
in the second fire to occur on Christmas Eve in this
church-the fires were 100 years apart to the day.
Afterwards, in 1989, it was decided to commission
new windows with an entirely different look to the
old windows; created by a glass designer in a new-
Tiffany style. The theme they chose to portray was
the ancient Gospel in a contemporary southern Indi-
ana setting, the history of the Christian Church and
the history of the Madison congregation. A compe-
tition among four stained glass design firms result-
ed in the selection of Stephen Purdy as window de-
signer and The Fox Studios of Indianapolis, IN as
the builders of the windows. The windows are
made of opalescent glass, painted and fired up to as
many as five times. On the south wall of the church,
antique windows were installed. These panels were
found in Lebanon, OH. Viewable from exterior.

Trinity Methodist
Trinity United Methodist is the youngest of the
Methodist churches in downtown Madison and
dates from 1872. In 1869, the trustee’s of Rob-
erts’ Chapel and St. John’s voted to unite into a
joint church named Trinity and build a new
house of worship. The first worship service at
Trinity was held on November 2, 1873. The
church was dedicated in
1874 and cost $30,606.
The stained glass windows were dedicated on
September 14, 1913 by President Harry Andrews
King of Moore’s Hill College. The windows
were created by Wm. Coulter & Sons of
Cincinnati, OH.

First Baptist
Church
The stained glass windows were added
in 1907 as part of the improvements to
the building for the Centennial. The
building construction was begun in 1853
and completed in 1860 at a cost of
$10,000. While little is recalled of the
construction and company responsible
for the windows, it is known that the
windows were given in honor of church
members by their relatives. The church
contains 10 windows measuring
44”x164”and 2 windows measuring 44”x
86.” In 1986 the windows were repaired
by the Louisville Stained Glass Company
from Kentucky at a
cost of $33,000.

Broadway Baptist
This congregation was organized in 1849 by
the Rev. Chapman Harris and Negro busi-
nessman John Carter, two active leaders in
the Underground Railroad and trustees at the
Eleutherian Colleges. The African American
Congregation separated from First Baptist in
1849 and met on the south side of 5th St. be-
tween Mulberry and West in what became
known as St. Paul’s Second Baptist Church.
That building was torn down in the 1990s.
Broadway Baptist is still an active congrega-
tion. The stained glass windows were do-
nated by Mildred Kiah, a retired teacher from
Maryland, in the 1950s.
Windows are viewable from exterior only.
Windows in the
Residential and
Commercial
District A variety of art and leaded glass windows can
also be found in the businesses and homes on
and around Main Street in downtown Madi-
son’s 133 block National Historic Landmark
District. Within this zone, a rare intact collec-
tion of early 19th Century Architecture may be
found including examples of Federal, Greek
Revival and Italianate buildings, many of which
retain original art glass front doors, sidelights,
and transoms dating from the mid to late 19th
Century.

Prince of Peace
Roman Catholic
Church Prince of Peace Church was founded as St.
Mary’s, the Church on 2nd Street between East
and Walnut Streets in 1850-51 by Father Anthony
Carius and the German speaking Catholics. The
structure was enlarged to its present size in 1869.
After 1883 the clear glass windows were replaced
with cathedral, transparent glass windows at this
time. In 1993, the local Catholic parishes of St.
Mary’s, St. Michael’s, St. Patrick’s (on the hilltop)
and China (in the country) were consolidated
into Prince of Peace Parish and worship contin-
ues at the former German Catholic St. Mary’s.

St. John’s
United Church
of Christ St. John’s United Church of Christ is a Greek
Revival Structure that was constructed in 1850
as St. John’s Methodist Church. It was pur-
chased by the Congregational Church in 1872
for $2500. The Congregational Church was or-
ganized in 1840 and received its state charter on
Jan. 31, 1842. It was formed by German immi-
grants of Evangelical, Lutheran and Reformed
backgrounds, who have continued worshiping
here since 1872. Until 1916 all services were
conducted in German. The Notable WWII Gen-
eral, Walter Krueger, lived in the parsonage on
the other side of Main Street as a boy on 320
East Street. He attended school at Eggleston-
Upper Seminary, where they laughed at him for
speaking German. The red in the stained glass
windows below represents Christ’s redemptive
death for humanity, the blue represents the Vir-
gin Mary, and the green
represents the Earth.
The 12 diamond shapes
in each window repre-
sent the 12 tribes of Isra-
el in the Old Testament
and the 12 Apostles in
the New Testament.

Christ Church
(Episcopal) This Gothic Revival Structure, designed by architect W. Russell West, of Columbus, Ohio, was built between 1848-1850. The stained glass windows were made and in-stalled by the Henry Hannen Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The vestry rejected the three lancet windows he designed for aes-thetic reasons, and hired I.C. and D.S. Miller Company of Cincinnati, Ohio to make new lancet windows. Today, some windows re-main that are suspected or attributed to Hen-ry Hannon in 1849. The left and right lancets are from the Wardell Art Glass Studio, Auro-ra, Illinois, 2000.
After rejecting the
original windows above the altar, the new windows were made within seven weeks for installation on October 24, 1850 at a total cost of
$197.50. By 1870 many of the Hannen win-dows were nearing collapse, then replaced and named by members of the congregation over the next twenty years. In 1997, a ten year project was completed to restore the windows by the parish with the assistance of Wardell Art Glass Studio in Aurora, Illinois, John and Evelina Clark, and Jean Farns-worth. These windows show exquisite exam-ples of some of the oldest American made stained glass windows still in their original setting. Windows are viewable from exterior only.
St. Michael
the Archangel
The church, which dates from 1837-1839, orig-
inally had clear glass windows with wood di-
vided muntins. The art and painted glass
windows were installed in the late 1890s with
the exception of the “Emmaus Window” c.
1910 located over the Main
Altar, created at the Royal
Art Institute of Munich,
Bavaria and was a gift of
Miss Ella Gallager and
Katie Mullen. This win-
dow is a true stained glass
and painted piece and is
dated and signed in the
right hand corner.
The remaining fourteen
windows tell a story of
their own through the use
of symbols and symbol-
ism. Some of the symbols
incorporated into the win-
dows include colors repre-
senting Christian Values
and flowers showing the
beauty of God and the res-
urrection of Jesus Christ, as well as other
Christian Icons and meanings.
Viewable by appointment.
