Meet the “worker”

Let’s call him “Ted”

Hello…

Ted works for a Company

But there is a problem

But there is a problem

I don’t want to

go to work

This wasn’t always the case

He used to be excited to go to work!

Ted felt challenged!

He felt a connection with his peers!

He was proud of his company!

He was proud of his company!

We do cool stuff!

Salary

$$$

And he felt like he was rewarded for his efforts!

Salary

$$$

But now he feels his job has become routine and rote

But now he feels his job has become routine and rote

I’m bored

He thinks the company is focused only on

$...

He thinks the company is focused only on

$...and he doesn’t feel connected to its mission anymore

He feels like he’s COMPETING against his teammates…

Back off!

He feels like he’s COMPETING against his teammates…

Back off!

He feels like he’s COMPETING against his teammates…and can’t share ideas or insights that might help everyone

And he feels like he’s being rewarded with false platitudes and quant sayings

And he feels like he’s being rewarded with false platitudes and quant sayings

And he feels like he’s being rewarded with false platitudes and quant sayings

Ahhh, good job…dude.

And he feels like he’s being rewarded with false platitudes and quant sayings

And he feels like he’s being rewarded with false platitudes and quant sayings

I don’t think he even knows my name..

Ted really wants to feel motivated again!

Ted really wants to feel motivated again!

I wish I knew what to do?

Then one day, Ted’s manager gave him this book…Driven and set up a program to help drive motivation in the group.

It contained information on what

motivates employees

Hmmm…interesting

Motivation has 4 main drives

A: Drive to Acquire & Achieve

B: Drive to Bond & Belong

C: Drive to Challenge & Comprehend

D: Drive to Define & Defend

Motivation has 4 main drives

Makes sense to

me!

Ted’s manager implemented some ideas from the book…

The New Rules

Reward team and individual PERFORMANCE

More TEAMBUILDING and BONDING

Focus on CREATING CHALLENGING jobs and OPPORTUNITIES to learn

Highlight the GOOD THINGS that we do and PEOPLE WE HELP

He had them take a survey to see how the 4-Drives impacted them…

He had them take a survey to see how the 4-Drives impacted them…

Hmmm….I have a high drive to be challenged and

learn

Ted’s manager structured pay and rewards to leverage the drive to Acquire & Achieve

Bonus Check

$$$

Now Ted earned based on how well he and his team performed!

Bonus Check

$$$

If my team and I meet our

goals we earn!

And Ted’s manager also focused on really recognizing behaviors that were beneficial

to the company!

Great Job!

Well done Ted!

And Ted’s manager also focused on really recognizing behaviors that were beneficial

to the company!

Great Job!

Ted’s manager also started to foster bonding and helped create opportunities for social

interaction

Which helped Ted form some close bonds that helped him work more effectively and enjoy

work more

And Ted took on new learning opportunities

And Ted took on new learning opportunities

I want to learn how to master this

project – I know I have a high drive to

be challenged!

And his manager helped by giving him some new challenging assignments!

While his manager still talked about the numbers…

…he also talked about how their work did great things for people!

Ted started to regain his feeling of pride about what the company does and how it acts

…It didn’t happen over night…

It didn’t happen over night…but Ted started to be motivated again!

I want to go to work again!

It didn’t happen over night…but Ted started to be motivated again!

Yeah!
