New Horizons

• Google Search Techniques were used to create the Scientific Supercourse at http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/Science/scienceBA.htm

• 440,000 Powerpoint Lectures were harvested in 600 academic disciplines of Science such as Engineering, Agriculture, Health, Environment, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Space Science, Information Science and Systems Science.

• Searches were conducted with English, Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese and Arabic keywords.

New Horizons (cont.)

• It is anticipated from prior experience with the Supercourse in the Internet, Epidemiology and Public Health that students and professors will utilize these lectures for learning.

• With its current content of 4,500 Powerpoint lectures, the Supercourse in The Internet, Epidemiologcy and Public Health can be enjoyed at http://www.pitt.edu/~super1/index.htm

New Horizons (cont.)

• The Supercourse was hosted at the 2010 Biovision meeting at the Library of Alexandria by Dr. Ismail Serageldin. It was a phenomenal event for the Supercourse. There were over 2000 people there.

• What is nice about a meeting like this is that we can share our knowledge across disciplines.

• There were 3 lectures on Robots:

New Horizons (cont.)• A professor in Japan made a life size robot looking exactly

like him and talking much like him; • Another professor made miniature robots in the shape of a

worm with a camera inside. He is into clinical trials to have people swallow the Robo-worms and do a colonoscopy;

• The last professor took sensors and implanted them into his arm, and his wife’s arm, as well as wiring up his brain. He could control the movement of his wife’s hand just by thinking.

Conclusion• The World Wide Web has brought anytime, anywhere

access to more than 100 billion web pages. Web search engines such as Google encompass news, images, video, directories, books, articles, catalogues, products, laboratory tests, blogs, electronic mail, maps, local businesses, satellite images, and lectures.

• We are now closer to realizing the aspirations of Tennyson's Ulysses:

“And this gray spirit yearning in desire To follow knowledge like a sinking star, Beyond the utmost bound of human thought.”
