DESCRIPTION

Redfern Future Projection: a documentation of my final year design thesis, the research and the proposal of a new train station in Redfern, Sydney Australia. The book is presented in 4 parts, part 1 is the study of 3 different public events in Sydney in relation to the use of public transport; part 2 is the study of a benchmark project; part 3 is the analysis of the selected site area with mapping exercises and part 4 is the intervention of the design proposal.

On an average day, the morning peak (07:30- 09:30) and the afternoon peak (17:30-19:30) accounts for most of the train line activities.

The packed cabins and platforms presents a different sense of public space. People try to be at ease in this spontaneous and intimate distances, escape into various anti-social behaviour, such as napping, texting and listening to music.

we were warned at the very beginning, a project in this scale requires a different kind of thinking...decisions of demolitions should be done if necessary, but wisely.

URBAN DISCONNECTION: Old Stuttgart Main Station

URBAN CONNECTOR: New Stuttgart Main Station

The old station track cuts off the connection of the city centre, sacrificing pedestrian flow between the two sides. The main road in front of the station lies on a wiped-out plaza, rendering the station an island.

The new proposal creates a public space in place of the original track to re-integrate the urban fabric. It also facilitates connection across the road, bringing the station and the Kings Street pedestrian zone together. The new design serves as the meeting point between the old city and the new development.

Why a New Station?

The Current Redfern Station is a traffic knot, caused by the conflagration of pedestrian, vehicular, cyclist and commuter traffics. The troublesome situation is compelling for a major change, with the consideration of the future expansion of both Sydney University and Australian Technology Park in 2030.

The expansion of University of Sydney into the North Eveleigh site, the new master plan will include education building, residential abundant greens pace and retail facilities; the ATP site is also great potential for future development, which will induce a large demand of transportation, exceeding the current situation.

The Station that Connects and Entertain, before and after the train operates

The project consists of two bridge buildings linked by an open pedestrian bridge; each bridge contains its own program. The first bridge contains the train station and an accessible roof, with gallery space and a nightclub, access via a ramp that is open 24 hours before and after the train operates. The choice of program is a protest against the current time-table system of train operation, and the mixing of activities that have previously been perceived as incompatible. The second bridge is the University Learning hub, containing small collections of books and digital media, reading room, class-rooms and lecture theatre, allowing both individual and collective uses.
