Inception of the movie:

The story is a reflection of Director’s own childhood experience

Five factors derived from the movie:

1.The trapped birds

The movie unfolds the social barriers and conservative outlook of the society. The characters show their helplessness in a vivid image where their potential of being something else other than slaves is killed before it emerges.

2. Political instability and regional disparity

Conflict of personalities regarding the political instability and regional disparity is very much visible in the movie. Young Milon and his elder brother Kazi present their different perception.

3. Exposure of culture

Cultural diversity among the Bangladeshi people has a great virtue. The movie goes on to show bauls singing, people celebrating different religious festivals, everyone attending different kinds of cultural activities.

4. Madrasa life

Even in such adversity Anu and Rokon build there own little world

and an undefined friendship

Conservative outlook of Madrasa and adversity of the place put young Anu in a tough situation.

Contradiction of thoughts between the hujurs are shown in the movie.

5. Rise of new hope

Increasing demand for general elections is visible in the movie.

Creating the sense of independence among the people of East Pakistan is quite the main scenes of the movie.

Realization of West Pakistan’s autocracy come to show at the end of the movie.

The movie showcases the backdrop of liberation war

Controversy:

At the initial part Bangladesh Film Censor Board banned the movie due to some religious overtones

Achievements:

Won the FIPRESCI prize in the section of Director’s Fortnight in the 2002 Cannes Film Festival

Bangladesh’s first ever film to compete in the Oscar
